Hello. I have been reading your posts trying to learn all I can about the north of Alabama. My family is hoping to relocate there in the next 6 to 8 months and trying to find the right place long distance seems impossible, unless you are rich, which we are not!
We are looking for a small town close to Decatur, which is where my husband's job would be. Not knowing the areas which are nice and not so nice.. makes it so hard. We are wanting a real nice neighborhood, on a budget... if you know what I mean. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance..
MaryB

What is your budget? Are you looking to buy or rent? Are schools important?

I have no direct connections to that part of the state, but from your description of what you're looking for, I'd suggest Athens,AL.

How about Decatur? Priceville? Hartselle?

Look at the Madison and Owen's Cross Roads area.

Default We seriously considered moving to Hartselle

There is a very large Beachy Amish community there, and the land is beautiful. Low crime. Affordable housing. It was picturesque.
But it was just too far from my husband's job. He works in Birmingham.

Decateur wasn't far from there, though.

"Beachy Amish?" Did you mean Mennonite? They're closer to FAlkville.
How about Cullman? It's not that far from Birmingham...housing is very reasonably priced as long as it's not on Smith Lake...pretty good schools...a lively downtown...active religious community...some truly great restaurants, even if it is dry!

Cullman has a nice little downtown, Hartselle is closer to Decatur. Really there are so many small cities/towns around this area where rent is very reasonable. The one thing though is if your DH has to drive a long distance to work and gas goes back up you really aren't saving any money.

We need a little more info though on your housing requirements etc
