Having worked around nuclear for many years the danger of a fuel meltdown is a low order of probability IMO. For one thing when ever an earthquake is sensed the computers controlling the system immediately drop the control rods into the core. That stops the reaction but doesn't dissipate the heat that is present. That they are injecting salt water into something like the reactor means they had an inadequate back up system. I never saw any designs for Japanese nuclear plants but I find it almost unbelievable that emergency generating facilities would be located in a location that could be inundated by even a twenty five foot Tsunami Wave. Here even spent fuel storage is above 18 feet above the highest predicted sea level. Flooding of the diesel powered electrical system could have been prevented at very low cost by simply building a flood wall raising the unit above the possible flood level.

The reactor was a GE which means the water used to move the steam to a heat exchanger was radioactive and there was a need for adequate backup water for just such an emergency. Using salt water and exposing the reactor to chlorine probably means those reactors will never start again due to the contamination. It certainly looks like they chose the cheapest way to go when the units were designed.

No immediate radiation threat seen for Alaskans

I think the Anchorage Daily News was more accurate in their headlines.

I don't think anyone knows this kind of figures yet, but evacuations make sense and are being carried out under the worst possible circumstances. The situation is terrifying enough and catastrophic enough that we should be very careful to not add to the situation. Perhaps it would be best to focus on what we can do-immediate needs, short term needs and long term needs. What can we do to help not only in Japan but in our own communities to function in case of disasters.

I don't know what we can do right now. Might not matter anyway. We only got 647 days left anyway.

Stiff that date isn't the end of humanity just a date that things will change. the Mayans never it was the end just that it would be a new beginning. Although I tend to make those joke about the days left I don't think we will be gone on 12/22/2012. I do worry that Alaska or even the west coast may get the effects of the fallout. In our current economy we do not need any more crap to hit the proverbial fan.

I just heard about it today. Forgot about daylight savings time too. I remember when the Heaven's Gate cult thought they were gonna ride out of here on the Hale-Boop comet. I guess they got too antsy and didn't want to wait so they all drank the koolaid.

Me? I'm gonna go ahead and save up my money for a new Subaru Forester. They've done some big revisions to the engine but I thought I'd wait a year while they work out the kinks. But then again it might be too late, eh?
