I just finished this book tonight. What a great read! It's very unpolitically correct and has some great stories in it. The guy who wrote it is an Alaskan.

I am posting this for you Alaskan folks who might be interested in some great summer reading. I found his take on bears and wildlife in general to be very refreshing. He's not real big on the "wear bells" and "bears are gentle berry eaters" PC crap that is in so many books.

Post back if you read it. I'd love to know what Alaskans think of the book.

I'm not an Alaskan but I also just finished the book and found it fascinating. What an interesting guy and an interesting take on bears....I've love to play some poker with him.

Yeah, I hear ya. One of the best books like this I've read in a while. He's had a pretty amazing life. Makes me feel like mine has been lame and tame. Heh.

Lol I wouldn't recommend this book for anyone who suffers from 'bearanoia'. It will make you think twice about wearing little bells and shouting "HEY BEAR" when in bear country.

I'm not an Alaskan (yet ), but I agree, it was an interesting read.

In the old lore of the Ohlone people down here in Norcal, there were two bear spirits. The Grizzly / brown bear spirit was an outcast and was even meaner and more evil than the black bear spirit.

Lots of truth to those old tales.

I haven't read the book. Checked out some excerpts and so far it looks like a load of crap. But I'll probably buy it anyway, read it, and likely confirm all suspicion.

Bah, that's a bunch of Ohlone baloney, the exact opposite is true. Californians.

(just a smidgen of a grin there).

That was sort of one of the things he noted in the book. A lot of people seem to dismiss black bears as not a threat while focusing too much on brown bears. He notes that black bears are found in a much greater range and in greater numbers. Despite being generally smaller than brown bears, they are quite capable of stalking and killing human beings.

He suspects that more people have been killed by black bears than we will ever know since some folks simply disappear when they go into the woods and no trace of them is ever found.

Here's a video of a black bear nabbing a moose calf.

And you can see in this video how terrified they are of people (not):

Here's another of a bear attacking and devouring a teenager:
