I cannot tell you why I miss the village and the forest and the bitter cold iced air. I cannot tell you in words what it is the ground sings. Maybe the village misses me.

Just got a Karelian Bear Dog puppy. Thinking we'll name him Brewski. Picked him up this morning from a breeder who lives in a little cabin on the other side of the Delta River, near the Tanana River bridge. It was kinda cool driving across the river on the ice bridge. I'd have never guessed anyone lived out there. A bunch of people do though; there are some serious hay fields out there and some nice houses.

These are the breeder's pics; he's a couple weeks older now. It's a little dark in the house now and I'm a little tired from driving all day, so new ones will have to wait.

Yeah, the idea is to have a dog that's very "bear aware" and energetic to take hiking and camping with us, and especially to increase my margin of safety when I'm out hiking alone. These guys were bred for general hunting purposes in Finland, but got their name and reputation for their instinct and ability to chase bears off. Apparently they're also good at running off moose, which are not as much an issue around town here as brown bears are, but will be useful up country.

Don't let your new puppy get loose, because if he does, and you go around town yelling, brewski, where's my brewski, mommy wants her brewski, people might get the wrong idea.
