300mm, um...F/8...I think...and 125o or something. I can't remember. I take a dozen at different settings and keep the best one.

You might try opening up the f stop to let a little more light in or a longer exposure.

He shot that with a 70-300mm VR lens, wide open and at the maximum 300mm zoom. The shutter speed was 1/200 second and ISO was set to 200, on a Nikon D300 camera.

I don't know if Rance uses a tripod or not, but that would help with this particular type of shot (and saddle him with carrying it around, so it's a matter of personal style and not really a technical point.)

There are two or three very likely ways to "improve" on moon shots though. Backing off the zoom from 300mm to maybe 250mm is worth trying (70-300mm zooms are not known for sharpness at maximum zoom). But hiking the ISO to 800 or 1600 and then stopping that lens down 1 or 2 fstops would no doubt make it much sharper.

Another way to solve that problem is to use a different lens. An old Vivitar 400mm f/5.6 Ais or even non-Ai lens can probably be had for relatively peanuts, and will be optically superior to a zoom lens (and also vastly less useful, but it will take better moon shots... :-)

But the most difference can be done easily with post processing! That image responds very nicely to a good dose of sharpening, and then a small touch of unsharp-mask helps. If the brightness and contrast are adjusted, all of those craters just stand out with crisp edges.
