I am very curious about this town. What is the crime rate like? What can I do for fun there? Are the people friendly? I'm excited about the idea of moving there, but I'm curious what it's like day to day.

I wouldn't move to Wrangell without already having a job in place.
I haven't been through Wrangell in years, but it's a pretty small town. Access is only by ferry or Alaska Airlines.
Crime is pretty low... : http://www.city-data.com/crime/crime...ll-Alaska.html

Read up on the interesting history of the town. I did and its intriguing. Seems to go thru booms and busts. Right now, it is as the "bust" level since only around 2,300 people live there. IF I were to pick that town (and I am not - too isolated and too small for me and the family at the moment), I would want to have at least a boat - or hope that I make friends with someone that does.

Having said that, I wouldn't mind visiting it one day. Just because of that rich history.

I worked there for a year back in '79'. Loved the place and always swore I'd return someday. Still have not made it back.

It can be a very nice town. Lots of logging roads to explore the island.
Make sure you have plenty of inside hobbies, though.
And get a boat.
The ice cream shop is my favorite part of the place (if it's still open).

Thanks, guys! It's going to be very odd being so secluded, but I think I could like it. Any insider info on how the shopping is?

Two stores, decent prices compared to the rest of AK (stuff comes on barge).

I remember the dairy being quite expensive, even compared to here in mainland AK. Other stuff was much more reasonable. Gas was very expensive.

A neat little store called "Bear Basics" opened a couple of years ago. They had some seriously discounted groceries, but nothing fresh. I hope they're still open.

My friend lived and taught school there many years ago, and still misses it.
