Ionia Community (Kasilof: living, dangerous, legal)

There was an interesting article in Saturday's ADN about the Ionia Community, apparently some type of therapeutic/sustainable living group near Kasilof.

Community took back mental health by redefining needs: Alan Boraas | adn.com

I have a friend who currently lives in So. Cal. who I think desperately needs something like this, but I want to make sure they are legit. Do any of you have any experience with them? Thanks.

They are legit. You turn your disability check and your PFD to them. I worked for a group connected to them. Not sure what I think of their methods, they get alot of grant money. Check out their website.

Ahhhh. I guess I tend to be cynical of stuff like this, personally I'm sooo NOT a bunny lovin tree huggin Greenie But this guy is definitely like that, a sweet guy with extreme ADHD who just isn't happy in the normal world. I just want to make sure these guys aren't a cult, dangerous, or exploitative.

I however did not find any legal charges, allegations or such against this community...it has been certified, studied by gov. agencies and all seems to be on the up and up....of course if the accuser has a mental issue which is what this community is made up of...then of course rants of illegal and unfounded allegations will flow.

What is sad, this community seems to be doing something good and then, along comes people making accusations they can't support. I for one will say, this is the last place you should come to get legitimate information.

there is a lot of "legitimate information" given here on this CD forum!...everyone is entitled to his/her opinion on everything from communities to the type of plastic to put on windows and which side of the window! Any community such as Ionia will be criticized...most people also know enough to recognize an unfounded rant as just what it is....

I suggest you call or email them; you'll get the info needed. Their leaders were on a mental heath board I was on 5-6 yrs ago. Their method is talking things out - no meds. Institutions over-medicate. As I said, contact them directly.

They operate on grants, everyone there is on disability and hands their check over, the same with the PFD.

I guess this is a once every few months thread Agreed on the over medication. This fella is still down in L.A. ..still struggling. He's definitely not "other destructive" just self destructive. Most of what I've heard about Ionia has been positive. I will touch base with them. Thanks.

Ionia is a place created by people who are mentally ill. They have a strict way of life which they impose on their members, including sheltering children from the existence of animal products. What are eggs? Some children have never seen them. Veganism is the only way. I was lied to often, which they call "protection" and the cross referencing you were speaking of is also known as "Polygamy" the older members sleep with one another and future generations are encouraged to to promote harmony in the community. Entire families who grew up here have been exiled and can no longer see the people they grew up with. Pregnant women are Vegan and commonly do not take supplements. I appreciate a vegan lifeatyle as healthy and healing but not if forced. Yes, people can come and go as they please- but many offspring have a difficult time adapting to the outside world.
Yes, I wouldn't call it a cult. Just a community of delusional people who are scared of the outside world ans instead of working from within have escaped to their piece of land paid for by government grants.
Disgusting. I believe in Free will. I believe in giving children choices. Stay away from this place at all cost.
