Going To Fairbanks from Anchorage - Tips?
Hello, I am looking into a potential job at Eielson AFB up by Fairbanks/North Pole/Moose Creek. Can someone answer a few questions? Additional advice is definitely welcome!
1) What will my car need for the harsh climate? After researching some posts, I believe a battery blanket, block heater and oil pan heater are a must. What else do I need and how much will all of this cost? Also, I hear that it gets so cold that the seats can freeze so when you sit in them it literally shatters the fabric!
2) I am trying my hardest to find an apartment oir living space close to Eielson that will take pets and has at least 1 bedroom (2 preferrably). I would also like to have a garage. Does anyone know any good apartments that can meet this requirement? Or perhaps a site that has apartments listed along with information on their facilities and policies?
3) Is the cost of living higher than Anchorage? What services does Anchorage have that Fairbanks does not?
4) Does Fairbanks have an airport? Or is it a drive to Anchorage in order to fly out?
5) Are the roads up there worse than the roads in Anchorage? Last year when it rained after the snow and froze the roads, people were not making it down government hill... or up government hill. I own a 2010 Mazda3 and it is only a front wheel drive car.
6) What are some concerns about the area? Such as places to stay away from, crime concerns, environmental concerns, etc.
7) Are the seasons the same as they are in Anchorage? Does the snow stop around April/May and start back up in September/October?
8) Are shipping charges higher when shipping to Fairbanks than they are to Anchorage?
9) What are good shopping places, malls, movie theaters, etc? What are some nice sightseeing places? I like driving around and finding places where its peaceful and beautiful to clear my mind. In Anchorage there is Potter Rd., Upper Huffman (Denali State Park), and Arctic Valley. What does Fairbanks have?
10) It sounds a bit silly, but it is a serious question. Are there a lot of single women up there? Or are they all taken?

More than likely you will have to rent a house or Apartment in North Pole, or Fairbanks. North Pole would make it easy for you to travel, since Eielson is around 8 miles down the Richardson. When you arrive at Fairbanks, the next town is Noth Pole. Eielson is around 8 miles past North Pole.
And yes, the cost of living is higher in the interior.

Thanks for all of the information, the links helped, but the main thing is finding apartments that accept pets, have 1 or 2 bedrooms and have a garage. I cant find information on apartments, but I can find an endless supply of numbers to random apartments in Fairbanks and the surrounding area.
