Albuquerque has had 26 homicides so far this year. We are two weeks away from the midpoint of the year. If we can keep up this rate we would end the year with about 52 homicides for the year. That would be the lowest total in five years, since 2015.
The first homicide of the year--Jan 1 at 2am-- is not on the map. It was near the Ladera Golf Course just a few yards from where I live.
It may be an error, or it may have been investigated and found to be something other than a homicide. Homicide numbers can be changed this way even many years after they are posted, either up or down. Albuquerque's low of 30 homicides in 2014 originally was 28. And the 2017 number of 72 originally was 75.
I had been hoping Albuquerque would do good and not have another homicide before the end of the first half of the year, but unfortunately there have been three homicides in the city since my last post. We are now at 29 for the year. At this rate we would end the year with about 58 homicides, still a low for the last five years. The unincorporated area of the county also had its first homicide of the year during this timeframe. Homicides in the unincorporated areas of the county do not count in our city homicide numbers or rate.
The Journal map is not official and it is based on their reporting. It may very well have errors or misreported numbers. For example, the listing shows BCSO investigating two homicides this year, but that doesn't seem to be accurate or match up with the map. And earlier this year they were counting the murder-suicide on Gibson as two homicides. However, that error has now been fixed.
I looked for information about that first homicide reported for the year and it looks like the death was caused by an altercation. The case may have been investigated and found to be self-defense or otherwise deemed to be something less than homicide.
Below I have listed the Journal's tracked homicides by month for both Albuquerque and unincorporated Bernalillo County. It looks like Albuquerque actually has had 28 homicides so far this year. But of course it's entirely possible that the first reported homicide of the year on January 1st is indeed missing from the map erroneously. I know that the map had 26 homicides listed as of my post on June 17th. There have been three homicides in the city since then, which would make for 29. An interesting thing is that after 8 (possibly 9) homicides in January, each subsequent month since then has had 4 homicides so far, half the amount. Unincorporared Bernalillo County has had one homicide for the year.

Ugh, this week was a week from hell! Not only have we seen a huge spike in Coronavirus cases, but now we've also seen a huge spike in homicides. Two more homicides today in Albuquerque, including one at the city's homeless shelter on the Westside. Good Lord!
APD released the final crime numbers for 2019 yesterday. These are the official numbers they will report to the FBI under the new national classifications for crime. Overall, crime went down in Albuquerque by 7 percent from 2018 to 2019. That's led by a huge drop in property crime, including auto theft. The other two categories of crime actually had slight increases. There are three classifications of crime - crimes against property, crimes against a person, and crimes against society.
I wanted to update the list of suspected homicides in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County for the first half of 2020.
Albuquerque looks to have had 31 homicides and unincorporated Bernalillo County 2 homicides after a suspicious death in May in the North Valley has been added:

The homicide yesterday is the third at Coronado Park this year, all involving homeless people and happening during an altercation at the park. The city really needs to do something about Coronado Park and the dangerous situation created by the homeless presence there. It's the prime location being considered for the new homeless services center and shelter, but neighborhood groups are understandably opposed, fearing it will add fuel to an already out of control situation at the park.
