New Amsterdam vodka. Saw it at a local liquor store the other night. A 1.5 Liter bottle was $20. The bottle claims the vodka is five times distilled. It was very smooth and enjoyable to shoot. Makes good Screwdrivers too. Just thought I'd make this recommendation to those who enjoy vodka
You think so? I've always found Svedka to be a little harsh personally. If it's offered, I will still take a shot or two of it but I would need a chaser which I dont like doing. When I take shots I like to do them straight and without chasers. Svedka is not a vodka to shoot chaser free. Its just too harsh I have a better time with New Amsterdam. Which when I tasted it a little more carefully, it seemed to have a woody taste to me with maybe a hint of fruitiness

Funny, there was a time when Svedka was my vodka of choice, because it was cheap and acceptable... always had a bottle in the freezer... because I was dating a Russian woman who liked to do icy vodka shots in those little Russian thimble sized glasses... but lots of them!

By federal law vodka is a colorless and tasteless spirit. It's ethanol and water, nothing more, nothing less.
There is so much marketing hoo ha that goes into shaping people's expectations and perceptions...
BTW, that 5X distillation thing is the latest piece of marketing spin. I hear that claim and visualize liquor going through 5 pot stills in a row, but no... not at all... these folks are just using a 5 level column still, the same as you would use to produce ethanol fuel for cars. They're all over the place now. I see this is distilled in Modesto, California... I wonder if the Gallo family is branching out?
Guess it's time to pull out the classic New York Times blind taste test among supertasters, in which Smirnoff beat a whole host of premium and super-premium vodkas like Ketel One and Grey Goose...
Everyones sense of smell and taste is different. I personally don't like vodka much. What's the point? It's the only drink I can think of that aspires to be as neutral and tasteless as possible. Weird. But hey, if you like it go nuts. Although, most people do not drink vodka straight. So whatever nuances you can perceive between vodkas will be greatly diminished when mixed anyways.

Personally I blame Bond... James Bond... with his "Vodka Martini, shaken, not stirred." I think it changed the drinking habits of millions.
Before the Bond series, vodka was mostly a component of cocktails, like the Moscow Mule... vodka, ginger beer and lime juice, served over ice in a copper mug, which was hugely popular among movie folk in Hollywood during WWII and the decade afterwards.
I like their Gin (New Amsterdam), I'm not a huge Vodka guy so I can take this one or leave it.
