No muddle? Mine is a bit of sugar (can be simple syrup or shake of powdered sugar ( the horror - see the thread in the main food forum) or a small bit of granulated - I don't like mine too sweet), bitters, orange slice cherry...muddle it well. ...add ice, favorite liquor (whiskey or brandy)...top with just a splash of soda...garnish with another cherry / orange if you like the fruit.

Guess water would be fine.....but to not an old-fashioned without the fruit muddle.

A well-done Manhattan or Old Fashioned is actually a great way to highlight the flavors of a really good bourbon or rye.

That's how I like them, pretty much, although I like a splash of soda rather than water.

I just mean that a very small amount of ice and water is best. I've ordered an Old Fashioned and gotten a glass full of ice and soda with a little whiskey somewhere in it, and the vaguest hint of bitters and orange.

Sometimes I forget to buy oranges when I make 'em at home, so my cheat is to use orange bitters.

My first choice is a classic Martini but I've never turned down a Bloody Mary.

Other than that, I'm a tequila-and-tonic gal.

If they didn't make me sick I'd say those drinks that have cream as a base. Whatever they were, I can't have them so I try not to remember them.

So otherwise, it would be a bloody Mary or a mimosa.

I love a Long Island Iced Tea. It looks and tastes like my favorite beverage of all time -- iced tea -- but unlike a tall glass of frosty Lipton it can also knock over a rhino.

This post kinda reminds me of what could possibly be considered a cocktail (but it isn't really, I don't know). When I was on the Appalachian Trail earlier this year I had real moonshine from eastern Tennessee (a lady brought local there brought it into a hostel) and it was a flavored variety called "Horny Toad". Soooo good. Sooo strong (but you didn't hardly taste the alcohol because of the sweetness). It was flavored with Kiwi, Pineapple and Coconut. She brought a couple 1-quart mason jars of that and a couple 1-quart mason jars of Black Cherry (with black cherries in the bottom). The black cherry one TASTED much stronger.
