Understand that if im black im EXPECTED to observe THE RULES? What rules are you talking about? I thought most of Jamaica was black, has the population changed?
If you think St Lucians are poor then you haven't been to a real poor country in your life.

And the only thing you noticed was that they were poor not their accent?? Pahahahaha

Well she said that was where her father was from so she's probably used to it.

Panties in a bunch?? Why are you so offended? Nothing wrong with being poor.

It is more like you are more expected to be aware of and conform to social norms if you look like a native (ie black). White people stand out as non native and thus get more leeway...even this has its limits though. Noone (white or otherwise) is allowed barefoot into non beach restaurants or allowed to wear bikinis off the beach for example. But whites are expected to be crazy enough to try these things.

Well St Lucia, and most of the rest of the Caribbean are poor. The fact that most Central American and African nations might be poorer doesn't remove that fact.

You will find yourself in a bunch of trouble if you go with an Ugly American attitude. People in the Caribbean will accept you as one of them, if you observe their codes of behavior.

This is way easier for a black than for white person, given the colonial histories of these places, and the fact that they detect that most whites don't really see them as anything other than vehicles for them to enjoy their vacation.

Or you can behave like a tourist, and then get treated as one, and there is a whole cultural experience that you will miss out on. Do you like people to look at you like an over size wallet just ripe for the pickings, or would you rather that they respect you as a person who they would like to get to know? They are especially interested in meeting black Americans with Caribbean backgrounds, but even those who don't have that, are also of interest.

I am not sure if JA$ are available in the USA, plus its not good to have too much cash. The current exchange rate is US$1=JA$112. The JA$ is weakening. If you get less than that rate just wait until you get to Jamaica.

You can also with draw cash from ATMs down there, usually dispensed in local currency. You don't necessarily need to find a cambio. Provided that you have US$ life shouldn't be too difficult. It might be best to use US$ when prices are quoted in that (unless it is a rip off) and JA$ when that is the currency quoted.

Also note that if you charge in JA$, with the currency weakening the US$ charged against your card might actually be less.

Depending on when you arrive there might be a place in the airport to get some loose JA$ for walking around. If you are flying into MBJ there is a currency exchange right there..

Remember that most people are poor (including some of the hotel staff), so you don't want it getting around that you have a lot of cash.
