Is this the bug you saw? [mod cut-- no posting links w/ <10 posts]
Desert Spider Beetle genus Cysteodemus

We have them in the Yucca area and I've seen them in red, yellow and a very beautiful green. A very cool beetle!

Thats not it, but boy that is an ugly little bugger isnt it! LOL

I am starting to wonder if it IS some species of velvet ant, that just has not been caught on film. My husband saw one yesterday and I wanted to scream at him for not waking me up to snap a photo.

Oh, ok. I was going to wait for amatrine to comment first, but it's a female velvet ant (which is not an ant but actually a kind of wasp.) What vjsoto said, but a different picture. The females have no wings. They're also called cow killers - they don't kill cows but the stings are very painful.

It does not look like that. The back end is big like what you would see with a black wood bee, but it is hairy black and yellow no wings. Could be another kind of velvet ant though as I read there are thousands of different kinds of them.

[mod cut-- no links w <10 posts] Bees with no wings sound pretty frightening. I wish I could help you more with your "siting." Just last week I had an exterminator out to identify and remove these little flea-like creatures from my bathroom -- lotta bounce, no bite.

Since i am not far from Tuscon makes sense.
