Hello I am a Canadian who recently relocated to San Jose to marry an American. We don't love San Jose and so are looking to relocate. We are moving by December. My husband is from Chicago and his family all lives there. I just can't fully get on board with moving to Chicago for some reason. We are also exploring Arizona. Right now we are trying to weigh out the options and decide which state is better for us between Illinois and Arizona, but we just can't seem to get anywhere. We are both 28. I would love to hear any and all advice. Thanks!

Currently live in Chicagoland, but moved here from Arizona. Love AZ, but Chicago metro has a population of about 9 million; so the job market is bigger. The husband is from Green Bay, Wisconsin, and this is his part of the world; although I always want to move back to Arizona.

Moved to Tucson for the U of Arizona in 1981 and loved it; just wanted to live there the rest of my life. But I have to admit, Chicago has been very good to us. Never mind the negative stuff you can hear about it; the husband got a top-notch masters in computer science from the U of Chicago, and he has had four excellent positions in the 20 years we've been here.

Chicagoland has four definite traditional seasons of three months each, like clockwork; and I have come to enjoy the beauty of the landscape and nature here. So I have two good choices; probably we will get a second place in Tucson before too long and become snowbirds while he finishes his working years.

I moved from southeast MI to Yuma, AZ 5 years ago. It is very hot here in the summer, but I will take that over the long gray winters in the MI/Chicago area. I'm going to assume if you move to AZ it will be in the Phoenix area. You can be in cooler temps within an hour in the summer. You can't escape the weather in Chicago without flying somewhere.

It all depends what you are looking for though. Chicago is a great large city with lots to do. Phoenix/surrounding burbs is not on par with that although still lots to do.

If weather plays a big role in your decision, I would say anywhere in AZ beats Chicago by a large margin.

All of this can be trumped by job opportunities available to the both of you of course.

What don't you like about San Jose? Assuming you can afford it, I would think it's a great place to be (weather and stuff to do is great, isn't it?)

If you want to move from one failed state to another, then by alll means, Chicago. There are a lot of pluses to living in Chicago over Phoenix, but after 32 years of the political BS I’m ready to be back in Az full time. The sooner the better . . .

At 28 years old, there is no contest. I would choose Chicago. There are going to be many more opportunities for career choices. You can earn your fortune in Chicago, then like so many others move to AZ in your twilight years.

Chicago and the areas around Chicago offer so much more for a full life. There is so much more culture available. Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin area huge playground. Everything from urban to rural living.

If you plan to have children, schools are far better and I am biased, but I believe mid-west values make people more broad-minded.

Illinois is expensive, and yes it has financial issues, but they will be resolved eventually.

If you plan to put down roots and stay a long time, Chicago perhaps has the edge.
Because, if temperatures keep rising, the Phoenix area might eventually become uninhabitable.
