Why is it that I see many Asian men with extremely long fingernails? And it usually isn't that all of their fingernails are long, usually I see many Asian men with long pinkie nails and either a long thumbnail or long index finger nail while the others are trimmed. What gives?
I also noticed this was common with Asian male foreign students. I heard that this was simply so that they could more easily pick their nose and ears, is that true? As an Asian American myself, I just find the practice of growing select long fingernails a little disturbing and pretty vile.

It has more to do with palm reading. I had a friend in Taiwan who claimed he knows how to do fortune telling. From the little I remember, it was better (good luck or whatever) that one's pinky is higher than the first line/joint of one's ring finger. Also, I forgot if it was better for either the index finger or the ring finger to be longer. Because the finger nail is included in the height/length comparison of the fingers, one can change one's fortune by leaving some fingernails long and some fingernails short. I didn't really believe in this, so didn't really follow his recommendations. I also find it gross anyway.
I'm not sure what the story is for Taiwan, but in Thailand the long pinky fingernail seems to be worn as a faddish tool to remove ear wax as well as digging deep for nose nuggets. A number of university students and other young people seem to sport the long nail. A lot of Thais don't see to be concerned about booger-picking in public. But it might also be sort of a "good luck" charm, considering Thais often tend to be focused on whatever brings good luck, just in case. The long nail could also be for a variety of other uses as well.
Doing a search, in relation to Taiwan, it might have been a sign of wealth for the upper crust who had no need for manual labor.
Never noticed that in either Korea or Japan (been in these two countries for a dozen plus years).
I think when people say 'Asian' they should be more specific. That covers 67% of the people on Planet Earth.
