Bangkok is a big city, you will love it if you visit here. There are many choices for you to choose what you would like to go or do, like go to shopping center, temple, market, etc. but you will bored when you on the road to somewhere in BKK, including me. Don't forget to try street food, an easy thing you can find it evereywhere in BKK.
I would love to go there.. hopefully in early 2017. It looks like it would be a great cultural experience for someone from the US. How is the crime can you walk around and explore fairly safely?

Bangkok is a relatively safe city to walk around and explore. Most likely, in terms of exploring, you'd probably want to use public transportation to get between points of interest. Otherwise, if you're just going to hang around the area of where you're staying, then walking is certainly an option. Avoid chatting with "friendly" street scammers and beggars. As for taxi scammers, decline any "tours" they might suggest or get another taxi.
You should still take precautions to reduce risks (carry wallet in front pocket, don't flash cash or jewelry, etc.) That doesn't mean to the point of being paranoid though. It just means being alert and aware as you would in any large unfamiliar city around the world. Bangkok and Thailand is generally safer (crime-wise) for tourists than the US. There are a LOT of tourists in Bangkok and Thailand, meaning the odds of becoming a victim of a crime is very low.
As for a "great cultural experience", you'll find a lot of interesting cultural and traditional things in Bangkok, but you'll also find it's much like any large city around the world. Bangkok is fairly westernized in many ways with a lot of modern conveniences. I'd recommend doing a little research ahead of time. Go, and have a great time.
I love Bangkok. Yes, the heat, humidity, and pollution can be a problem. But the prices are very reasonable, people are friendly, safety is a non issue compared to large cities in the USA, food is excellent, and the culture is amazing. It's a city worth checking out.
I see. Then how difference between Bangkok and Phuket. Phuket is an Island right? should be sand and sun
Phuket packs quite a bit for a much less-populated area. Still has the nightlife, and even some shopping malls (similar to BKK), but also a beach.
Still outside of those things, BKK is a very large international cosmopolitan city...but Phuket feels like a 'slice' of it, with a beach.
