Some of those countries you listed aren't East Asian geographically, ie Vietnam is considered a South East Asian country. You might want to revise your list or revise your thread title.

East Asia only refers to China, Taiwan, Japan, and the Koreas, FYI.

The East Asian countries have such big contrasts and pros and cons to each other. It's very difficult if you want to make a living in one of the countries. Being an assistant English teacher in a crappy little school just won't cut it with me, as that what it seems most Westerners' job classification is.

China has the most dynamic economy in Asia and probably the easiest to escape the EFL trap, but the environmental pollution is WHOA. Japan has the highest standard of living but an extremely difficult job market to crack into, and it's the hardest language in Asia to learn when it comes to achieving native level fluency, and xenophobia in Japan is rife. Same story in South Korea, but at least you don't need to devote years to learn how to write Korean. Taiwan is probably the most foreign friendly country in East Asia, but the economy there supposedly sucks. Has a high standard of living, but not as high as South Korea and Japan.

North Korea......it just exists. The country shouldn't even be acknowledged existence in these kinds of threads as it is one of the worst countries in the world to live in, literally.

Why mention Vietnam?

Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar.

I'll rank the whole continent.

1. Japan - Overall the best.

2. Taiwan - Actually pretty horrible, but ends up here by default as other countries all have issues which I can't quite put up with.

3. Israel - Life seems pretty tough there as the cost of living is said to be extremely high, and the conflicts with other Arabs are pretty scary. There's also racial tension between the Jews and the Arabs I guess? It's extremely gay-friendly, which is amazing.

4. Korea - The fact that they have no death penalty is excellent and an example for all Asian countries. Lower than Taiwan because of the hierarchy, chaebols, and their highly stressful and competitive society.

5. Singapore - I like Singaporean people, at least the ones I've met. Would've been higher if it was freer and less conservative.

6. Hong Kong - Ruined by China. The Hong Kong spirit is almost completely gone. Still a developed city though. Has bar none the best and most efficient legal system in Asia notwithstanding the hilarious wigs, which is great.

7. Russia - Russian culture is sublime and Russian cities are grandiose. Too bad it's such a corrupt blackhole and bully to its neighbours in Europe.

8. Turkey - Like Russia, seems to be such a great country to visit, too bad the country is such a mess.

Don't really care about the rest.

Japan, has the longest life expectancy, with Macao, Singapore and HK not far behind. Cannot help itself with the bad economy.

Macao. A special administrative region of China, was ruled by Portugal for about 500 years. Is very small in area but is among the top few highest GDP per capita in the world because of the gambling industry.

Death penalty is not yet offically abolished in South Korea. The earliest which abolished, Macao in the late 19th century and Hong Kong in the 1960s, following the abolition in Portugal and England.

Asian Russia, is colder than Heilongjiang and most other places, except coastal part of it. The Islands to the north of Japan are volcanic and interesting, with white people living on them.

Pollution is a big problem in Northern China. The pollution also spread to Korea and Japan.
In East Asia, the more south, the healthier the people. Hainan Island and Yunnan are good.

Vietnam- feel like a bit messy and have a feel of Taiwan and China some decades ago.

Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia
Used to be quite closed, start to open up more. There are increasing investment from China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, HK and Singapore.
They are poor, but people do not starve there as lots of agriculture.

East Asia also includes Mongolia. A country many people are not familiar with.

Chinese should be much more harder for westerners than Japanese and Korean as Chinese language do not have alphabets and a phonetic system. You cannot pronounce a Chinese word by just looking at it. You will need to hear someone to speak the word first. Most learners need many years to be able to pronounce a whole Chinese book read by a high school student in China, because pinyin is not typed in most Chinese books.

For China, you cannot easily generalise because China is large with considerable cultural and economic differences in different parts of China.
