For most Western centric cultures Japan is the obvious choice, but though I voted for Thailand, I am surprised to see it as second. Due to not hearing it spoken of often from people who have not been there or deal with their people. Though those who fall into that category love it,
I spent a month on the main island of Java in Indonesia. I find it one of the more spookier countries of Asia by far. But I know others who seem to love it - usually Australians, who treat it like Americans do with Mexico. Meaning they go there for months at a time and just surf and party and such.
Java is fairly industrialized and dirty. Most of the big cities are on the main island of Java. It isn't a particularly pretty place, but there are some interesting cultural stuff like Yogyokarta in particular. Try to get to Bali, which is right next to Java.
Should you be worried as an American? Not anymore than if you were an Australian. They aren't too keen on either one, but multitudes are going there and visiting there anyways, so definetely go and don't worry about it too much
Great beaches, good food, lovely people. That's all the positive I can give about Thailand.
Unfortunately not enough to call it my favorite Asian country
Definitely not. As far as attractiveness of SEA women, for it's between Thais and Filipinos. I feel Thai's are more attractive on average, but the most attractive Filipinos are more attractive than most attractive Thais. So i guess it's quality vs quantity. But when naming your favorite country, as a tourist, great beaches, lovely food, and nice people are all tops, along with cultural activities/sites, which they have in spades.Even as aretired expat, add cost of livng and decent medical, and Thailand would still top my list. Philippines would be on it, but a little too western/too much like home. Especially growing up arounf Filipinos. It holds less mystique/allure.
FYI Indonesians call white people as "bule" is not intended to be racist or insulting, it is just a nickname, like we tend to call all middle eastern people as "arab" even if they come from non-arab country like Pakistan...
bule derived from word "bulai" which mean "white on whole body including their hair because of lack of pigment" BI: "putih seluruh tubuh dan rambutnya karena kekurangan pigmen berwarna pirang"

There’s a range of looks amongst Filipinas. Morenas out in the provinces with a little darker complexion. In the big cities a bit lighter skinned. Mestizos who have intermarried for generations and have Spanish features.
And other mixtures that are different and attractive. Chinese Filipina. Indian Filipina. And around places like Subic and Angeles City Filipina Americans white and black who are the result of US military bases pre 1990’s.
