I would celebrate the Winter Solstice by being glad that the apparent journey of the Sun to the south has ceased, so the days won't continue to shorten. Likewise (and even more so where I live), I would celebrate the Summer Solstice by rejoicing in the fact that the Sun's apparent northward journey has ceased, so the days won't continue to lengthen and the heat and humidity will eventually end.
I think a good Atheist holiday to celebrate would be one for Bacchus (Roman name) or Dionysus (Greek name). Nobody thinks he is real so it wouldn’t bother Atheist, and if the myths are right he sure knew how to party. Seems the fall party in his name lasted 10 days with wine and lots more. We could cram it into a long weekend in October and end it with Halloween. Than drop easter to keep the proper balance in the national days off.
Sounds good to me. There's nothing like a good Bacchanalia!
