I have a friend coming from out of town and would like to know where is a spot or location, preferably an open area or park, close to the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta airport where on can watch the planes. Doesn't matter day or night.

Thanks!

Peachtree Dekalb Airport. There is a restaurant/bar in the airport with a patio on the tarmac...Downwinds. Go there all the time. They also have a playground off the runway if you're looking to bring kiddos.

I second that. Good food. A lot of single prop, twins, and private jets take off from that airport.

It's not easy. You can watch from the top levels of the parking gargages, but expect to be questioned/sent away by overzealous APD officers.

The absolute best place is to rent a room on an upper level of the Renaissance Hotel (specify a runway view). You can spot to your hearts content there. It ain't cheap, but it's the best - bar none.

Sammy, that's a good question. You would think that the busiest airport in the world would have a decided observation area for people that like to watch planes take off, but they don't. The best advice is probably pay one or two bucks and park at the top of the parking decks and watch. Here's a link to a story describing great areas to watch planes take off from different airports around the country.

Take 85 to Central Avenue or Airport Loop Road. You can not park stop on Airport Loop Road but in Hapeville, they are a few streets that you can park on to see the planes land. If you go wear the Renaissance Hotel, you can find somewhere to gaze along that street too.

Another one is 285. Get off on Clark Howell Highway. You have a few options on the ramps and the surrounding area near the airport to watch the planes come and go. Just loop around until you find a good location.

Downtown College Park is pretty good. Or grab a milkshake at the Dairy Queen on Roosevelt Highway.

I'm going to ATL for the first time next week. Staying at the Renaissance Hotel, but don't know if I can get an airside room. Does anyone have any more suggestions of where to watch planes near the hotel?
