Yes, it did.

When were those neighborhoods destroyed?
No, CW, that is no criticism of you. I appreciate your posting the map as well as this thread. It's just that the map reminded me how close we came to losing the integrity of some of our best intown neighborhoods.

I just love that I finally got to see the ludicrous proposals in map form! I know my ATL History, miss...!

Can you imagine how bad Atlanta/Inner DeKalb would be if these highways were built??? I shudder to even imagine...(especially after living in the immediate area for 9 years...)

It was totally ludicrous. Definitely one of the worst transportaion ideas in Atlanta's history. But it wasn't just a proposal. The bridge supports on either side of Moreland Ave. were actually built and were still in place until the mid '90s.

Not to mention that over 500 homes were demolished in Inman Park, Candler Park, Poncey-Highland, Virginia-Highland and Morningside before progress on I-485 was halted.

Forgive me... I'm a young'un. I knew about Inman Park and Poncey-Highland, but I didn't know there was any destruction to Morningside and the Virginia Highlands. I thought those got away completely intact when all was said and done.

I don't recall Virginia-Highland suffering much direct damage, but Morningside got whacked. And as I mentioned earlier, the purchase of right-of-way, the destruction of several hundred homes, and the general pendency of the project created an air of uncertainty.

The most visible destruction in Virginia-Highland is where John Howell Park stands today on Virginia, as well as the expanded ball fields behind Inman Middle School across the street.

Thanks for posting this... It is kind of an odd single place in the middle of the area. I would have never guessed.

You are both very welcome, cwkimbro & arjay57.

I simply can't wrap my mind around the fact that an Intersate could be roaring through that area today. And they had actually planned a stacked, multi-level interchange right on top of what we now know as the Carter Center!

Is it any wonder that the grannies were chaining themselves to the trees?
