Sunday alcohol sales legislation given good odds *| ajc.com

'New Gov. Nathan Deal has said he supports allowing local governments to make their own decision on Sunday sales.'

That is rather surprising to me --but I don't keep up with politics as I probably should.

Coming from a family of native Georgians who definitely will not see the need for the sale of alcohol on Sunday I have to wonder if this is a step in the right direction. That's just how we are. shrug

I still dont get what the issue is... My wife and I both work and we do our shopping on the weekends. We dont buy alcohol regularly but when we do we have to plan our saturday to do it.. having a 3 1/2 yr old and a newborn our schedule is hectic. This further hampers having to schedule our time. Nowhere else in the country has this law. Are you saying there are no christians anywhere else in the country??

The existing laws are archaic, Bible-Belt driven and just plain silly.
It's high time we made reforms.

I agree that the law is silly but I don't see much economic benefit from Sunday sales. If anything it would just shift around purchases that were already being made. Of course it would hurt small liquor stores who would have to be open on Sunday now.

I'm sure the same people who have a problem with this also smoke, had sex when they were not married, cursed, etc on Sunday so I dont see the problems

No liquor store will 'have to be' open on Sunday; they would still have the option of closing their store on any day of the week that they desire.
Sorry, but I have a large problem with laws that attempt to force the value system of one group upon another. Giving an individual the option of purchasing liquor on Sunday in no way infringes upon the civil rights of another, and to me that should be the acid test to any considered legislation.

I applaud it as step toward less government intrusion. The last thing we need is the government trying to act as the moral police.

Have you looked at for any studies showing an econimic benefit from Sunday sales?

As more and more households feature two working parents, Sunday has become the second-busiest shopping day of the week.

There has been some opposition to lifting the bans from liquor-store owners themselves, who have worried that they will simply spread six days of business over seven days—and lose their day off in the process. But that hasn’t proved to be the case: A recent study found that the dozen states that have recently allowed liquor to be sold on Sundays generate more than $200 million in new state revenue every year. The average liquor store in these states is earning between 5 and 8 percent more per week. “It’s good for the store owners, it’s good for the state, and it’s added convenience to the consumer,”

They would not have to be open. (EDIT: Lovindecatur beat me to it). Anyway, isn't one of the main principles of capitalism competition? Let them compete, or let them go out of business. And anyway, even if this passes, grocery and convenience stores will almost certainly NOT be allowed to sell liquor. Liquor stores will still be the only place in GA where you can buy vodka, gin, whiskey, rum, tequila, etc.

the only reason they are closed is because they cant sell alcohol

it would be the same as a grocery store closing on sunday if they were not allowed to sell food on sunday
