Finally some good news. This should free up a lot of jobs for Atlantans who may be feeling the pressure of the recession.

It will be interesting to see how many unemployed native US citizens will move, even temporarily, to the agriculture areas of our state and take up these jobs. I worked in a peach orchard one summer when I was a teen - it is hard work! Outdoors in the heat of a Georgia summer doing intense manual labor - for not that much pay. It was a good summer job for a kid, but I'm not sure if folks will take up the challenge any more. In the meantime, the farmers may lose hundreds of millions.

Good news for who? I guess you dont realize that the reason most of those jobs are done by illegals to begin with is because the wages are crap. Same reason you see mostly hispanics (whether legal or not) working with lawn maintenance crews, because most "Americans" have too much "pride" to get out there and work hard for low wages. So you think Atlantans are going to run out and apply for these jobs now? Hell a lot of these people out of work could have ALWAYS gotten these types of jobs but chose not to.

And I know that mainly because my uncle owns a lawn care business. You couldnt make people get out there and work, but the hispanics were always calling looking for employment. That is, until the economy went to crap. And even then, non-hispanic folks would interview with him and honestly think they were going to make $10-12 an hour for low level labor. That's just the way it is here. They dont mind working those jobs because over in Mexico itd take em a month to make what they make in a week here. But for folks from here, pride kills.

Yup, it's time for all of you who are certain that the illegals are stealing your jobs to race out and snatch up these highly lucrative positions! Go for it. This is exactly what you wanted.

I think arjay was being factitious.

Edit: Oh he wasn't?

Well, it sure beats sitting around living on a government check. No, these may not be high status jobs but you get an honest day's pay for an honest day's work. So you get a sense of pride and the knowledge that you're putting something back into the economy. If we don't get those crops out of the field we're driving up the cost of food for others and hurting our farmers.

Ansley, yes it's hard work but Americans are tough. One good thing about these jobs is that they're seasonal, so people have the opportunity to get back to college or whatever they were doing before.

It just means the farmers will have to pay legal workers whatever wage the market will bear. Consumers will also have to pay what the market will bear for their produce. Isn't that how capitalism works?

Not to state the obvious, but if people were clamoring to get any job they could, there wouldn't be a shortage.
