Hi. I am moving to the area in a month or so. My office is near the Buckhead MARTA stop, however I want to live outside of the perimeter to the north. I like a small town feel versus suburbs but I am betting that I am not likely to find that close in. I have one elementary age child so schools are important. I am not overly concerned about the price of the house I buy since I am from Westchester NY...everything down there seems inexpensive to me. I am concerned about the commute to work though. Please let me know some areas to look at that may be nice as a starting point for house hunting. Thank you.

Have you been here? It is much different than Westchester. Once you leave I-285 going north, it will be mostly subdivision type development. That type of development, generally speaking, goes north so far that by the time you found a more "small town" feel, you would probably be too far for a reasonable commute. Alpharetta might be a good option. More spread out, good schools, good access to GA400. However, traffic on GA400 can be dreadful. And also traffic can be unpleasant at times in Alpharetta itself.

If you can afford it, why not just live in Buckhead?

Have you looked at the City of Decatur? It's a wonderful small town (1 sq. mile with a courthouse square -- concerts on the square, good schools, MARTA rail station under the square, etc.) inside the perimeter and close to Emory University (cool college town vibe). Many feel that Decatur offers the best of both worlds -- small town feeling but convenient to everything in the city.
