Lloyd Hawk, chairman of the 151-year-old historic church’s board of trustees, said having new property that Friendship can move to is critical to striking a deal for a new facility to replace the Georgia Dome.

“We have to make sure we don’t risk our church and what we mean to the community,” Hawk said.

In addition, he said, Friendship wants to avoid the fate of some churches that once stood in the Lightning community, which were bulldozed for the Dome. He said many of them never rebounded and found a new place to worship.

“We cannot find any of those around today,” he said. “That’s a major concern.”

Looks like there are several empty lots just on the west side of the Dome according to Google satellite view that would be big enough for them looking at the footprint of the current building.

Well I was being sarcastic, but ideally you'd like to be as close to a MARTA station as possible. Otherwise people may find it more convenient to drive.

The perfect example of this is Turner Field.

As others have mentioned neither Vine City or Civic Center are built to handle that amount of people either

I think Civic Center can handle the amount of people. Its a big station with a tunnel for people to cross between platforms.

That site is over a mile away from the north site, is in one of the worst neigborhoods in the city, and is on branch line that few people will use.

The design that I saw had it literally across the street. We'll have a better idea about this if it comes up again, but it wasn't a mile away when I saw the proposal.

I can't find it. If I do, I'll post it, if it hasn't been at some time before. For reference, it was mentioned in one of sketches for developing the Turner Field lots. It's been difficult to find it again.
