In case if you haven't noticed, House Republicans are proposing a bill that would severely limit, if not abolish, "transportation referral services" - such as Uber and Lyft.

The Gold Dome bill to regulate Uber and Lyft has been introduced and it's a doozy | Atlanta News & Opinion Blog | Fresh Loaf | Creative Loafing Atlanta

Under the bill, these types of services would have to comply with strict regulations which would probably make it nearly impossible to operate in Atlanta.

Rep. Alan Powell, R-Hartwell, Rep. Dustin Hightower, R-Carrollton, and Rep. Darlene Taylor, R-Thomasville are the ones in charge of "vetting" the bill. Note they're all Republicans and are all in areas outside of Uber's and Lyft's service areas.

The good news is that Uber and Lyft have hired substantial lobbyists to combat this bill, but given our backwards nature in this state, I doubt that they'll have any success.

I get a kick out of how Republicans constantly talk about the 'free market' and expend inordinate amounts of time trying to kill competition for the industries whose lobbyists who contribute the most.

And I'm sure someone will say something about how 'Democrats do it too.' Yep. But they don't harp about it incessantly and accuse anyone supporting any type of regulation they don't like as being anti-free market.

^They'll probably let it through once they get showered w/ enough gifts, re-election cash, and golf junkets. Gotta give those officials a taste right?

That said, the existing Atlanta taxi market is abysmal and pretty threadbare as it is given the almost complete lack of inspection on the vehicles, driver licensing, etc and minimal barrier to entry. The opposite end of the spectrum is the NYC highly regulated medallion system that limits the market but also does protectionist things like minimizing train access.

This is stupid.

After using Uber, I have no desire to ever use a regular taxi again.

Feel sorry for you,the best taxis are regulars drivers dedicated to the same customers for years.

If you take a different taxi every time, you're going to have different quality service .

Uber do not offer necessarly better service than taxis.
