Very interesting comments from one of Cumberland's movers and shakers.

Quote:
Q. Even though it’s a suburban market, and not served by a MARTA line, do you think Cumberland will continue to become more walkable, and possibly offer more alternatives to the car?

A. “I think we have to. The question is ‘What is that alternative?’

“That’s where there is great opportunity for an entrepreneurial approach, for creative ideas. I’m just not a big proponent of rail. I think it’s way too expensive. I think bus rapid transit is the way to go.I just came back from Spain, where I was at what’s becoming this culinary center in Europe, a place called San Sebastian. It’s on the north coast of Spain, a town of about 200,000 people. There is a bus every 45 seconds going one way or another. The buses were comfortable, fast, efficient, flexible. What we need to do here is get people from Cumberland to the Central Perimeter. We need a much more comprehensive way of thinking about this issue, but with our five-county metro area we tend to be too territorial.”

I can't see the article unfortunately, and am not about to pay $115 to do so.

But, in a nutshell, yeah, there needs to be some kind of rapid-fire BRT across the top end perimeter. But I'd also say there needs to be the same thing from Arts Center to Cumberland as well.
