Those comments were from Secretary of Transportation John Volpe in 1969.

In other words, government officials have been talking about the overbuilding of highways and shifting more money to transit for nearly 50 years now. We can see how that has worked out...

And Volpe was a Republican.
Hence the creation of UMTA (now the FTA) around that time.

Senate transportation plan includes lower gas tax | www.ajc.com

Quote:
According to details obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution from people with direct knowledge of the changes who were not authorized to speak on the record, the new version of the bill includes:

A 24 cents-per-gallon state excise tax on gasoline and diesel, down from the House’s 29.2 cents-per-gallon proposal.
An annual “highway user impact fee” of $25 per passenger vehicle and $50 per truck or bus; essentially an additional fee charged as vehicle owners annually renew their tags.
A $5 rental car fee, charged at a flat rate for all rentals regardless whether they are for business or pleasure.
This should get interesting.

Remember 3 years ago when we paid an annual fee as part of renewing our registration, that was replaced by a more expensive sales tax . . . . and now people are proposingwe pay both while claiming it's not a tax increase?

Why hasn't the user fee for EV's in this proposal been reduced proportional to the fuel tax reduction? In an equitable scenario, that $200 fee would be reduced because they are proposing to lower the tax it's intended to offset.

The new proposals favor the interests of trucking and transportation companies, who do the most damage to our roads while paying a user fee not at all in proportion the damage they cause.

$100M versus $1B? Doesn't seem fair, but until we get those Bubbas out of the gold dome nothing will change.

That was set by Congress in DC a number of years back when they allowed heavier trucks than the then existing interstates were designed to carry. And they only slightly increased the diesel fuel tax.
