No, the "crime" language was used as a proxy for race by anti-Americans (those against other Americans and yes against progress). These people tend to call themselves conservatives. They listen to AM radio which validates their world view. The modern conservative movement was built on resentment and anger of mostly Southern whites. In fact, the GOP created strategy based on this. Conveniently it's called the Southern Strategy. Famous GOP strategist Lee Atwater discussed exactly how it worked.
