Cobb requests $101 million in state funding for transportation projects

Quote:
On its wish list for a share of the nearly $1 billion in state money that legislators recently authorized to fund much-needed highway maintenance, Cobb County is asking for $9 million to build a bridge over I-285 to take Braves fans to and from the team’s new stadium, $3.5 million in state funds to retrofit a parking deck at the nearby Galleria Office Park to accommodate Braves shuttle buses, and millions of dollars for other transportation projects...
To put that in perspective that $101M is the total cost of the Downtown Streetcar from all funding sources, federal and local (It got no state funding).

That bridge will not cost $9M, I do not know what fantasy world AECOM is living in, but a 1100 ft bridge over a busy freeway will be 3X or more higher.

The Marietta Daily Journal - GDOT to help fund 11 road projects near SunTrust Park

Quote:
MARIETTA — The state of Georgia has agreed to provide about $42 million to Cobb County to help fund 11 transportation projects with a total estimated cost of about $68 million, many of which are near SunTrust Park.

The projects the state will commit money toward include improvements to several intersections around the new ballpark, including at Interstate 285 and Cobb Parkway, as well as upgrades to roads that pass on either side of the stadium and mixed-use development the Braves are building in Cumberland.

The county originally submitted $101 million worth of projects on Aug. 13 for the state’s Department of Transportation to consider contributing to, including a proposed multi-use bridge over I-285 that would connect a parking deck at the Cobb Galleria to the Braves’ mixed-use development and a project to rebuild a portion of that deck to allow transit vehicles to access the bridge, according to county documents. GDOT declined to contribute funding to either project.
And the projects getting state funding:

Quote:
♦ Improvements to the intersection of Cobb Parkway and I-285 westbound as well as the intersection of Cobb Parkway and Spring Road/Circle 75 Parkway. Total estimated cost: $5.2 million. GDOT contribution: $4.7 million.

♦ Adding additional turn lane capacity at Windy Ridge Parkway and Cobb Parkway. Total estimated cost: $800,000. GDOT contribution: $750,000.

♦ Widening the Windy Ridge Parkway bridge over I-75 and improving pedestrian facilities. Total estimated cost: $10 million. GDOT contribution: $7.75 million.

♦ Adding an additional right turn lane on the I-285 eastbound ramp at Cobb Parkway. Total estimated cost: $650,000. GDOT contribution: $550,000.

♦ Improving pedestrian capabilities on Interstate North Parkway from Windy Ridge Parkway to the Atlanta Marriott Northwest hotel. Total cost: $1.6 million. GDOT contribution: $1.45 million.

♦ Realigning Interstate North Parkway at Interstate North Circle. Total cost: $4.55 million. GDOT contribution: $4.5 million.

♦ Building a new, four-lane road to connect Windy Hill Road at Spectrum Circle to Terrell Mill Road at Bentley Drive. Total cost: $30 million. GDOT contribution: $12 million.

♦ Improvements to Cumberland Boulevard from Akers Mill Road to Spring Road, including new turn lanes and sidewalks. Total cost: $7.05 million. GDOT contribution: $2.15 million.

♦ New signs on interstates in the Cumberland area. Total cost: $1.1 million. GDOT contribution: $1 million.

♦ Variable message boards to be installed on the interstates and major routes. Total cost: $5.05 million. GDOT contribution: $5 million.

♦ Additional CCTV cameras to monitor traffic flow in the area. Total cost: $2.05 million. GDOT contribution: $2 million.

I have seen the plans for the pedestrian improvements on Interstate North Pkwy, the road will narrowed to 2 lanes and a multiuse trail will be installed. Interstate North Circle will be widen and become the thru route. It is a well thought out plan and I will give them credit for putting people above cars on this project.

Glad at least the state is not funding that silly bridge. Still, it should not be helping out with the other Stadium infrastructure.

Honestly, most of the approved list doesn't seem to be related to the ballpark.

Yes it is, it is all about providing relief for traffic related to the development.
