No, they are not. They are on the streets of Atlanta today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgNhYGAgmZo

I would wager a large amount of money (and many investors are) that driverless Ubers will be here within 10 years, if even that long.

Gotta love the logic of the "burn it all down" vote. The jobs are not coming back. In fact more will be leaving now and UK itself might end up dissolving at the rate this is going.

If you still want to earn the same fares as a taxi driver, go right ahead. No one is stopping you from charging that. Just don't expect many customers. People are tired of being over charged by taxis.

Of course, if you really are a premium driver with a premium car, there are still options like Uber Black Car.

But again, many are finding they earn just as much doing many cheaper trips than a few pricier trips. And that is the beauty. Both drivers and customers have choices they didn't have a few years ago.

Yes Uber X worked for both the driver and passenger two years ago, but Uber continues to cut Uber X rates per mile 3 times(so far) and UberPool lower then ever more. You will continue to see the quality of drivers and cars go down. Good drivers are leaving. So enjoy those sub prime cars (Corollas, Camry, and Prius) that Uber leases out. No worries Uber have major lawsuits against them and the Brits leaving the EU will cause investors to think twice about investing in this company. Also companies like Juno and Arcade city will eat Uber alive.
Do UberX and UberPool riders really care about the quality of car? I thought that's what UberBlack is for.

As a long time software developer, I am tempted to take you up on that.

I personally don't see it based on liability risk alone.

I love the idea of driverless cars; I see it flowing like network traffic through the internet. However, the biggest hurdle is culture and "manual cars".

Until people who want to physically DRIVE are taken out of the equation I do not believe it will become viable on a large scale. And how many generations will it take to remove the desire to drive from our culture?

What about Peds and Bikes? Those are not on the same network and have human error.

easy. automated lasers mounted on the automated car - it can decide if the bike and going to impede the traffic and can blast it out of the way

that would quickly quench the desire of man to transport himself, right?

Liability is not an issue. The company will just cover them since they are already safer than human drivers.

And the desire of people wanting to drive is over stated. People like riding horses too, and you can still do that you just don't use them to get around regularly any more. Driving yourself will go the same way.

Again, self-driving cars are already on Atlanta roads. And have been driving on public streets in California for years now.

If you were betting that self-driving cars could not happen at all you have already lost. So if you are serious about taking that bet you had better be smart about setting the goal posts.

Liability is a huge issue, and is one of the reasons it takes 18 months to get new firmware revs on commercial aircraft. What happens if a smart car decides to kill a driver in order to avoid a crowd? Or vice versa?

Citation? Example? Smart cars are not the same as driverless cars. There is a reason why aircraft always have a human crew, and flying an a/c arguably has fewer variables than a ground transport.

It will get worked out in the courts the same it happens today. You don't have to write laws for every possible hypothetical scenario.
