BECAUSE MOST PEOPLE CAN'T USE TRANSIT! Why is that so hard to understand? How is a student from Cobb supposed to get to Tech? Drive all the way to Lindbergh just to stay out of your precious city limits? What about a professor from Rockdale? Drive up to Indian Creek? Nothing on a campus is 9-5 or 8-4 except a few admin positions so Xpress and the GCT and CCT routes won't work. Even most of the in-town locations are out of reach of transit to Tech requiring either backtracking (from the west) or taking forever (from the east).
Xpress routes. I am sure many students do it.

Students and professors have irregular schedules, and most students at Tech stay late or go early to study. The limited service hours of the Xpress and express routes make them USELESS to students and professors.

Research fail:
Using your Rockdale example; Xpress runs between 5-8am inbound and 4-7 outbound
Route 423 – East Conyers/West Conyers/Panola Road to Midtown | Xpress

Given the reach of the GRTA system, and the ability to put bikes on them, then yes, I am.

A city that's "livable" needs it major thoroughfares! Not every street can be a two-lane cowpath.
We HAVE major thoroughfares. On is RIGHT NEXT to Tech Pky. and is much more a major thoroughfare than Tech Pky ever was.

We have TONS more of them around, too, including the interstates.

You can't put the cart before the horse! If you make West Midtown unlivable because people can't can't where they need to go in a timely manner, than all the transit in the world won't help.
The horse has been here for decades! Massive roads, that have not solved traffic, and limited bus services. Now we're incorporating things other than purely car-focused roads, which will themselves be timely, alternatives to getting around the perpetual traffic.

Keeping Tech Pky as it was wasn't going to be any kind of lasting solution. Given the spacial restraints of our city, prioritizing things other than cars is the best possible option. If that inconveniences commuters reliant on their cars, then maybe they should be advocating for alternatives to their areas, because we CAN NOT perpetually accommodate cars.

Residents can take advantage of local infrastructure, and local businesses can leverage local infrastructure to pull employees who have access to the overall network.

The world will not end if we dedicate road space, either for bike lanes or transit lanes, but traffic will persist no matter what we do to increase car-throughput. It is in our best interests, in the long run, to make more space efficient options attractive.

So the road has gone from two lanes and a 25 mph speed limit to two slightly narrower lanes and a 25 mph speed limit? Is that really what we're listening to people complain about?

Apparently so, but some people don't like change if it means relegating the automobile to second fiddle status.

I am very well aware of what kind of schedules Xpress has. I was stuck using it for about a month and I keep up with their plans. As I ALREADY said, it's useless for most college students and professors.

And now you're assuming he lives within reach of Xpress. Maybe he lives in Northwest Atlanta? Maybe the Druid Hills area? Maybe South Dekalb? Maybe East Cobb?

Northside Drive is NOT "right next" to Tech Parkway, nor is Marietta Street except at one point, and they both serve very different purposes.

"Tons" of them in one area doesn't mean they're automatically useful everywhere for everyone.

Great! I'm glad we're making progress, but the progress has to be in order. We can't cut the massive roads now and put in the transit later! It's like building a new condo and starting with the penthouse suite. You can do that and just leave it on the ground, but it's a waste until then, and it might not be what's actually needed.

Again, all of this "pushing people onto alternatives" is fine and good, but the alternatives have to exist FIRST!

Yep. No actual capacity is being reduced. Drivers (myself included) will now be much less likely to go 40+ mph.

Written by an entitled driver who probably feels that he has the right to drive like he wants to wherever he can.

He needs to grow up and get over it. The road is for us all, not just big-ass SUVs and trucks.

If you were driving 40 mph near the swimming facility, you were in for a rude awakening. There was a quasi speed bump that would send your car flying in the air.
