Another idea for the Library's renovation: what about a green-roof? Let's turn the thing into a giant planter!

A reading garden / bit of shade / etc. There's tons of open space on the roof, and the HVAC stuff can be walled off / fenced off to keep people out.
Green roof is an excellent idea. Jackson HS has a great example https://www.google.com/maps/@33.7391...!3m1!1e3?hl=en

Hotdamn, Maynard Jackson got one heck of a makeover since I was there last!

That's what I had in mind, yes, though maybe more flowers and trees, and less blending in seamlessly with the hill-side.

Jackson is applying for grants to build an edible garden on the roof.

Fair enough. They certainly have the acreage for it! An all-seasons garden would be nice on the Library Roof, so that everything just dies come winter.

So glad to see support for saving the building increasing. I read about this building many years ago when reading about that style. I personally like the style.

That is one heck of a nice high school.

Do they ever have tours?

The best thing might be to rethink libraries.

Quote:
Circulation at Central Library has been down, said the new library director, Gabriel Morley. He sees the library’s function as different in the future — smaller spaces, perhaps bookmobiles, where people can pick up requested items or use computers, in lieu of gigantic buildings where people browse the shelves.

“You can’t build it and hope they’ll come,” he said. “The building doesn’t define us at all. That’s just our location.”
Might be time to move on from the traditional library, and now is a good time and reason to change it.

Libraries already are more than just books. Some host events, computer labs for those who cannot afford computers/internet, job training, etc.

And archive, and convert to E-Books, and offer those e-books, and movies, and audio books, and free community space for meetings, and job training, and research help, and on and on and on.

Libraries actually have a decent idea of how to remain viable and adapt to the times, but often lack the resources to do so. I say let's make our central branch into something resembling modern and up to date.

Not everyone enjoys reading E-books or has the capability to buy a device that can display an E-book.
