there is a concerted effort from central planners to reduce sprawl, make urban areas more efficient, reduce car dependent neighborhoods, and diversify regions. "Suburbia" bears the brunt of these initiatives and is often the target of derision and scorn for its more wide open spaces, shopping centers, carcentric lifestyle, and supposed lack of diversity. Remember, the vast majority of this nation is rural with many city based workers originating from a suburban or rural environment. Not everyone WANTS the urban lifestyle and are just fine escaping from the city to our .375 acres of privacy

I don't mind the suburbs but I wish we had a more coherent core. Take Toronto for instance. Atlanta and Toronto have a similar population, and tree cover, and both boomed after WW2 yet Toronto is much denser even in its suburbs. (Don't get me wrong, Toronto still has the ranch style houses you see in Atlanta, but it's pieced together better, with more sidewalks and parks and schools integrated into the community.)

Why doesn't the original poster move to a community that has what they want? You know, vote with their wallet? Yeah, job, blah, blah, family, blah, blah, etc, but if urban living is important, than you will find solve the other problems to make it happen.

Suburbia appeals to a lot of people in metro Atlanta, but you don't have to live there.

because "that side" is never happy with what they've got; they strive to affect their desired change EVERYWHERE b/c they believe they know what's good for everyone else...

I agree, and it looks like he has done about the best you can in Atlanta, he says he has moved to midtown.

Zoning and planning and getting the broader public to be aware of these issues. Luckily, at least in the city of Atlanta, that seems to be happening.

This is plumb silly. My neck of the woods in suburbia is just fine. I find it no more and no less convenient than living in the city. Lots of folks have to find ways to justify their choices by criticizing others' choices and likes.

Like it or not, one day people are going to have to confront the reality of the massive amount of resources needed to maintain suburbia. It's pretty clear that what we have now is not sustainable forever.

It takes a massive amount of resources to maintain central cities, as well. I cannot fathom the costs to the city to build out its infrastructure to accommodate the suburban folks moving there and to abandon the extensive infrastructure already in place in suburbia. Seems to me, we need to do those things that make sense, such build out commuter rail.
