This isn't a "rant against Atlanta" thread..but more less.. something (obvious) that I've been noticing getting worse and worse and its coming to a point where its becoming unbearable. I live in Gwinnett and every day, regardless of the hour unless its between 9pm and 5am, I-85 WILL be backed up in atleast one direction.. EVEN ON THE WEEKENDS, Sunday afternoons I come down the ramps for 316 into I-85 south and its a parking lot..unreal..

Yesterday I had to use the toll lane at 11am between 316 and I-285 to bypass gridlock, then when I came to the perimeter, an amber alert sign warned me of a 20 minute delay to get to midtown, so I took I-285 West (toward Sandy Springs / Marietta) and that went okay until we got to I-75 of which it backed up to a crawl between I-75 all the way to GA-166 Langford Pkwy... ... Going back home, of course it was close to rush hour so thats a given and I-85 north was backed up between I-285 and Indian Trail.. but.. this is getting ridiculous.. every single day I go out I'm gaurunteed to sit in traffic..

The Toll lane is the only thing that makes my commute on I-85 bearable, mind you I have absolutely no issues with paying to avoid traffic... I know there are worse places, but those places are generally much more populated than our metro is..

Are we just going to continue to grow and grow and not address this matter?

Trucks really need a new by-pass.. I-285 is now engulfed deep into the metro. I consider it an inner-city highway. Truly the whole transit system, Train, Bus, and Highway needs a serious overhaul but.. guess Im just wishing here... I don't know if I can continue staying around here with this kind of traffic though..

Let's add more lanes, that'll solve traffic congestion!

The traffic getting horrible is what will force alternative solutions. Adding more lanes and roads is a bandaid. If it speeds up traffic, more people will say "Hey, driving this road is so easy let's move out to the suburbs and commute!" And before you know it, the road is a parking lot again and people are clamoring for more lanes. With this thinking, by 2050, 275 will be a 30 lane highway on either side.

The solution is to not put on a bandaid, but rather to let the traffic force people to think differently. That could mean moving closer to the city instead of commuting, as well as electing officials who promise to expand Marta.

I know many of us feel we would never use MARTA and that this is a car only city, but it doesn't have to be. Trains can be used as your only mode of transportation. Tokyo has density and population that makes Atlanta look practically rural, yet they rarely complain,of traffic because the vast majority of people just hop on trains taking them everywhere they need to go. That is what we should be striving for.

Metro Atlanta will go the same route as Metro Los Angeles, and that is to start expanding the mass transit system once traffic levels here reach LA levels (24/7 traffic). Then, once everyone is equally pissed off about the reduced quality of life, the metro will get a massive mass transit overhaul. Until then, get used to it or like you said you may end up leaving.

(an utter mess) .. and is so spread all over the place making the last mile a big issue when commuting.
