You’ll no longer be able to use cash to buy a hot dog or a beer at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The downtown Atlanta venue will become a cashless operation, one of the first two major U.S. stadiums to do so.

It will stop accepting cash inside the gates beginning with Atlanta United’s home opener Sunday, requiring payment for food, beverages and merchandise with credit cards, debit cards or mobile payment services such as Apple Pay. The policy also will be in effect at Falcons games and, at least for food and beverages, all other stadium events.

Well everything seems good. People who don't have cards or don't want to use their cards will be able to put the cash they have on pre-paid debit cards. It's great that there's no fee for these cards; you don't have to worry about spending all the card at the game as they allow you to spend it elsewhere. In addition they are also lowering the prices of items at the concession stand. It seems pretty fair to me.

Are wait times at concession stands really that bad that we're abandoning the use of cash? I thought THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS meant just that; it can be used anywhere.

As for buying a card at the stadium, what are the fees for purchasing one of those cards?

philadelphia just banned this.
Quote:
Philadelphia's city council voted Thursday to require most local businesses to accept cash as payment, pushing back on a growing trend in which restaurants and retailers accept credit and debit cards only.
“There's a reasonable segment of people who wouldn't be able to patronize those stores because they don't have any kind of credit or debit card,'' said Councilman Bill Greenlee, who introduced the bill. "It's setting up an us and them kind of situation . . .And those people tend to be a little lower income, and also minority and immigrant. I don't think that's the kind of message we want to be sending.''

No surprise they waited till after the superbowl to do this. Also, so much for being accessible to local residents. Anyone who's surprised, stand on your head.

I don't see a problem if they let you buy debit cards free. Even Dave and Buster's makes you pay for their card. MARTA makes you pay for a Breeze card. I don't see how this is any different.

This was more or less in force for Monster Jam last weekend. With a few exceptions, pretty much all the concessions places had card only signs on prominent display.

Don't confuse payment of a debt with a contractual requirement.

If they specify (usually a sign at the register) that they don't accept cash then part of the contractual agreement you have in ordering food is that you understand and agree that cash isn't accepted. You can't just point to the dollar bill after getting your food and demand it gets paid in cash.

On the other hand, if there is no provision in place for not accepting cash, then after getting the food if they demand a card as payment you have the right to demand to pay in cash as you have now incurred a debt and wish to settle it.

I don't really understand why people still use cash anyway. It's inconvenient, it causes you to constantly have useless change, and you can't track what you've spent. There's no record of anything you've purchased, so you can't complain or get a refund. It can also be lost or stolen.

With a card, you can dispute any charge, you have record of anything you buy in case you need a refund. It can be stolen but a call to your r company cancels it and you're not responsible for the charges. In addition, cards give you purchase protections (extended warranty, etc) and cash back/rewards.

I don't know the last time I've used cash for anything, probably years.
