Morehouse cuts staff; CAU ends physical education | ajc.com (http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/atlanta/stories/2009/02/08/morehouse_clark_atlanta.html - broken link)

Definately tied to the economy...“It’s something that schools across the country are dealing with,” Moore said. “It’s regrettable, but necessary.”

Well, they cut adjuncts, not full-time faculty. Adjuncts know their contracts may or may not be renewed semester to semester. It just so happens that this semester, a lot of contracts weren't renewed. While it's a shame to cut them, I'd be more concerned if they were cutting full-time faculty; as in the ones with benefits.

Spelman cutting 35 jobs, education department | ajc.com (http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/atlanta/stories/2009/02/09/spelman_job_cuts.html - broken link)

Spelman College officials announced Monday that they are eliminating 23 jobs that are staffed and another 12 vacant positions and phasing out the school’s department of education.

The women’s college is collaborating with neighbors Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College to create an Atlanta University Center teacher certificate program.

Spelman is also discontinuing its continuing education and children’s dance programs, and will stop subsidizing its Edelman Child Care Center.

The announcement follows revelations by Clark Atlanta and Morehouse that they are cutting back on faculty as endowments suffer losses in the stock market and families of students and donors face their own financial setbacks.
