It's the Beverly Hills of Atlanta, the home of both Old Money and New Money. It is also one of the premier destination shopping areas in the entire country, certainly the premier upscale retail district in the Southeast.

While I am sure there are nice families in Buckhead and there are family oriented things to do there, this is not the first (or second or third) term I would use to describe Buckhead. The first (and second and third) term I would use is MONEY. And lots of it.

Buckhead is the "Beverly Hills of the South"...some even say the "Beverly Hills of the East."

Ditto to what everyone else said. Buckhead was named so as hunters use to bring their hunt there after wards to show off and display. They would literally show the buck's heads so thus the term buck+head became Buckhead.

Buckhead is also home to good public and private schools. Buckhead - Atlanta, Georgia - Education, schools, universities, vocational

Buckhead is so often defined as a 'wealthy enclave of mansions' (and it certainly has that), but in truth there is much more variety to it than that. While Buckhead west of Peachtree has a good number of what could be described as 'estate homes', Buckhead east of Peachtree has many neighborhoods with more of a 'cottagey' feel ie Garden Hills, Peachtree Heights, Peachtree Hills and Peachtree Park (do you get that we have a fondness for the word 'Peachtree'?)
As far as 'family-friendness', I would say this applies to many of Buckhead's neighborhoods...but like Saintmarks rightly said, there is oftimes a spirit of competition and one-upmanship among many of the ambitious, upwardly mobile parents there. Most parents there also tend to avail themselves of private schools once the kids are past elementary school age.
I will vouch for one Buckhead neighborhood in particular, since one of my college buddies is a longtime resident there. Brookwood Hills is a delightful enclave of stately homes on lots that are relatively small (thus giving it more of a 'citified' feel). They have a neighborhood swim and tennis facility that is top notch and one of the things that she frequently extols is the closeness of the neighbors. Her family has loved living there.

And Brookwood Hill students attend the wonderful E. Rivers Elementary School and the equally good Sutton Middle School.

The cons are traffic..

The pro's are most everything else. The nicest part of Atlanta, which unfortunately is a city with many bad areas.

What major city doesn't?
The OP should know that there are many wonderful neighborhoods in Atlanta. Buckhead is certainly not the only game in town.

Define major city.

I would put the Twin Cities metro in the same general category as the Atlanta metro, and it has VERY few bad areas compared to Atlanta. FWIW.
