I'd probably head over to Manor Road and eat at one of the many restaurants along there, East Side Cafe, Hoovers, Vivo's, etc. All are good. Or, go to south Austin and have dinner at either El Gallo (very casual, real) or Guerro's (kind of trendy, but fun). Central, I'd go to Hyde Park Bar and Grill. North, I'd go to the Salt Lick BBQ in Round Rock. Even better, to the original Salt Lick in Driftwood.

Okay, that's not just one, but a few to consider.

If I was going to eat at just one, and it was to be nothing fancy, just great food, there are two, maybe three, that I'd recommend.

Azul Tequila (south, at Ben White and South Lamar, northeast corner next to Target - yes, really). I'd order off the interior Mexican menu and have a margarita (I'm a purist, picky about my margaritas, and they make them right).

Mama Roux (awesome Louisiana cooking, again in a strip center, Parmer and I35, in the same shopping center as Walmart).

The third is not technically in Austin, and is a bit of a drive, but worth it: Monument Cafe in Georgetown, for home cooking with Kobe beef and local ingredients wherever possible.

Oh, dang, I've already thought of three or four more places, and you only asked for one!

I dont mind more than one option.

Monument would be perfect since we are driving right by there. Salt lick is also close. Anyone ever heard of Mighty Fine Burgers? It looks pretty good.

Mighty Fine Burgers makes a GREAT burger - but I wouldn't choose that for my only meal in Austin. I prefer the burgers at EZ's on north Lamar - but Mighty Fine is mighty fine too!

It's really hard to choose and everyone has their own "tastes". I don't care for the Salt Lick in Round Rock, except for the chopped beef sandwich, which I think is the best I have had at any BBQ joint in the area - but there are many who are sure to disagree with me. I also don't care for the Monument Cafe - it's OK, but not really great, IMHO.

My vote is for the East Side Cafe - anything you get there will be good. Hoovers right across the street from the East Side Cafe is great if you are looking for down home southern style cooking. That said, their portabella muffalata is outa this world!

Hyde Park Bar and Grill would be my next choice.

Oh and the European Spinach pizza at The Brick Oven is very good too!

See, you can't eat JUST ONE!

If you're thinking burgers with a 'hoopla' atmosphere, Mighty Fine is--well, you know--mighty fine. I'd recommend Moonies for burgers, 183 @ Anderson Mill or 183(So. Bell in Cedar Park).

I'll second or third Monument Cafe but was disappointed that such a place does NOT have sweet tea! Save room for dessert!

For me, it would be Bess Bistro on the corner of 6th and San Antonio.

Torchy's tacos. Either the trailer location on S First or the sit-inside/patio location farther south on S First. Try a fried avocado and a democrat. The shrimp taco is also awesome. Definitely very good food.

You can hop over to Lamar, SoCo or Barton Springs Rd. to get desert at another trailer eatery... like Gordoughs or FlipHappy.
