There are times when I want the best BBQ in the world and am willing to drive to Lockhart (or Lexington!). There are times when I just want lunch, so the local spot is OK.

There are times when I want a transcendental burger, so I am wiling to drive to the Buda Grocery. There are other times that I just want dinner, so P. Terry's is just fine.

Then there are times when I don't want to go out for anything - and pizza is one of those things I can get delivered or pick up and heat. I am smart enough not confuse the two situations - just like I don't confuse Rudy's with Snow's.

I don't consider that "growing up" - I consider it being discriminating enough to fit the solution to the situation.

Home Slice is great, but the best pizza ever, is at North in The Domain. They have this incredible, super thin crust, prosciutto pizza or the eggplant pizza. Mmm,mmm. Wish I could drive over to North right now, but sadly, I'm in Albuquerque.

Fair enough. I concur.

Still, along with attaining a certain level of <errrm> maturity I've learned that merely cramming a certain volume of indiscriminate foodbulk down the processing chute at regular intervals neither makes me very happy nor contributes to my overall well-being. Grabbing A slice of Ray's Famous (which Ray's Famous? Any Ray's Famous!) whenever I happen to skid through NYC is a time-honored tradition. But to paraphrase a famous quote, once is philosophy, twice is perversion.

Today I'd rather eat pizza less often, than to eat the fast-food mixage that mainstream American pizzas have become. Come on, hot dogs rolled up in the crust edges? Deliver us from evil, Amen.

ACTUALLY, I probably should have narrowed it down to central Austin, particularly near UT. That's the area I plan to visit when I go. Also, I usually like to drive down Lamar (north and south). Preferable someplace where they sell it by the slice, rather than having to order a whole pizza.

If you need a slice centralish go to Homeselice on South Congress, if you need a small pie got to House Pizzeria on Airport just south of North Loop or East Side Pies across the road. Pizza sucks BIG TIME in Austin. These places, in my regrettably extensive experience suck the least. (I throw up a little in my mouth when I remember Mangias, Brick Oven, Austin Pizza, Saccones, Reales, Vespaio, Frank & Angies)

Thanks. I've heard of Home Slice. I've also been curious about Conan's for many many years. I feel like that is the place I should try. The one around 29th Street. I used to work with someone from Austin who said Conan's was the best. But this was over 10 years ago.

Ozzy,

Though I haven't eaten there yet, there is a place called Rockin' Tomato. I think it is on S Lamar but I'm not sure. Anyhow, I've heard great things about it.

Hope that helps.

Eric

Homeslice sucks. Find Stony's pizza truck... that's the best pizza in Austin. I know they're usually on 6th and Red River during bar time.

If you're at UT, then the pizza selection isn't the greatest. You can get slices at Niki's in Dobie Mall. The Double Dave's on the North side of campus has a pretty good all-you-can-eat lunch buffet every day for $9 and that includes a drink. There are lots of TVs in there showing ESPN and the Longhorn network so it's a place you could hang out for a while. Other than that, Gatti's on MLK has a buffet as well, but I'd probably go to Double Dave's before I'd go there. Austin's pizza on the drag would be ahead of Gatti's of course, but on par with the others.

Conan's is worth a trip and does a buffet at certain times depending on which Conan's you go to. I'd call ahead to make sure. I don't think that you can just get slices there.

Now if you were asking where to search out tacos or breakfast tacos in Central Austin then you might get more activity. Pizza definitely is not high on the list of great food offerings in Austin.

Pictures of Conan's pizza look great. According to their menu they have lunch specials with slices at all their locations.

As far as breakfast tacos, I am in San Antonio. I am not going to say anything more than that, in fear of starting an epic Best Taco City debate.
