X Games announces new host city of Austin, Texas for 2014 - X Games

Not too surprising in my opinion. This will bring even more national/international exposure to Austin and be an economic boon for the city.

Edit: I accidentally made a typo in the thread title. I meant 2014-2016, not 2017.

Cool. The guys at TEKGNAR on MLK must be jumping for joy. This will boost the skateboarding/bmx culture quite a bit in the area. The newly proposed BMX track in Cedar Park will probably come about that much more quickly as well.

Thank goodness it's in May and not June, July or August.

Congratulations Austin!

I posted this in Charlotte forum on 5th of May. I predicted you would get it. How could they refuse COTA its new and has everything . In addition with event being moved 2 months earlier the weather in Austin is less fickle than other finalist cities.

Generally, yes. May is SUPPOSED to be our 'rainy' month, but with the drought lately.... Anyway, maybe that will make it rain in May, finally .

Interesting:

Although it's too early to say whether locally popular sports such as wakeboarding will be added to the docket for Austin, Guglielmino and Epstein did say a handful of possibilities have been discussed.

...and smart:

The Austin X Games will take place more than two months earlier than the event they're replacing, due largely to the city's stifling summer heat. X Games Barcelona, which was plagued by rain in May, is moving to a different date. An ESPN spokesman said next year's complete Global X Games schedule will be released soon.
although that is still our rainy month, if it is going to rain. I am kind of glad that the press actually printed "stifling heat" and "Austin" together .

It would be a hoot if it rains. Bad for the tourism dollars if that happen, but I can imagine XGames officials would think why they ever move it out of LA.

Charlotte has issue of summer afternoon thunderstorms. Last year we had the stiffling heat and this year this first week all summer it hasnt rained (not normal) If we won the XGames we would have a hurricane
You would need bullet proof vests for Chicago and Detroit is Detroit.

I think the decision was made when the "finalists" were selected. Only Austin fits in with the general branding of the games.

Charlotte does too, at least much more closely than Chicago, which I think is the least close fit. Detroit some years back would have also fit somewhat, but the current economic climate is a bit of a wet blanket...

I think they chose to leave for financial reasons. It sounded like the city was possibly demanding more money for use of the facilities than ESPN was willing to pay.
