Trying to see what the average commute is in Austin for kids to get to an elementary. How far away is the elementary that your house feeds into?

About 3/4 of a mile. We're in Steiner Ranch.

1.4 miles to our elementary or 4 minutes (we live the closest to our elem of our three zoned schools)
4.3 miles to our middle or 10 minutes
3 miles to our H.S. or 7 minutes

I included the other two schools because, clearly, there are folks living closer to those schools and farther from the elementary school that still commute there.

As the crow flies:
Elementary: 1,500 feet
Middle: 1 mile
High School: 1.7 miles

Slightly longer by actual road, but not much.

It seems like in most newer neighborhoods they are very close. For us, it's about 1/2 to 3/4 mile to the elementary school. This morning I rode bikes with my two sons to school, then rode home and drove to work. My wife will meet them after school and make sure they get home safe. The middle school is about the same distance if you walk or ride because there is a sidewalk from our neighborhood, but to drive it is probably a little over a mile.

So, I'm guessing 6 or 7 miles is crazy far? Is anyone that far away from an elementary?

I'm guessing this is outside of the city? In AISD most elementary students live within 2-3 miles of the elementary school. I live about 5 blocks from mine. In AISD there is only bus service for kids who live more than 2 miles away, in most elementary schools the vast majority of kids live too close for bus service.

I have a co-worker that lives in DSISD, and they may be that far, since they are very rural.

Edit: Just checked Google Earth - they are 1.7 miles 'as the crow flies', but almost 7 by road. I know that the bus picks them up, but it takes them forever to get to the school because of the wide, low density area that the bus covers.
