During the worst of rush hour, it is just under two hours from San Marcos to Georgetown (~57 miles). During non-peak hours, it is right at an hour (as per Google Maps).

Flights from Austin to LA are 3:25 and from LA back to Austin are around 3 hours. Guess that tail wind helps . As mentioned, if you were to fly in, you would still need to drive from the airport to your destination in the same traffic.

So, yeah....it is not as quick to fly from southern CA as it is to drive across town. I think he was judging the truth by the actual travel-time numbers, your number of posts were incidental.

You're going to be limited by lease terms in order to fit your budget though depending on the size of apartment that you want and the area of town. There are a lot of apartments out there that will be within your price range, but most of them will want you to sign a one year lease. If you're looking for something short term and will want to get out when your house sells, you might have to pay hundreds more per month for a month-to-month or a lease term less than 6 months. We were a bit surprised by this when we rented an apartment while in-between selling and buying another home. A couple complexes that we looked at wouldn't rent any of their units at all for anything less than a one year lease.
I recently helped a client find a short term lease house for her and her two LARGE dogs (livestock guardian dogs). They are in short supply but there are more than there used to be - landlords are catching on to the "move here and lease for a few months while deciding where you want to buy" market. She paid average market. You just need someone, apartment locator if that's the way you want to go, real estate agent if a house, townhouse, duplex, etc., who is a bulldog for finding it for you. A more expensive short term market are the executive suites - I've had clients (even with pets) who have chosen to do that when they didn't find a house as quickly as they needed to move. That IS more expensive so not appropriate to your need for a cheap place.
