We are good people from so cal so don’t hate us ! Haha. Our daughter is in Austin now working a GREAT job out of college (go Baylor!). We need to rent somewhere cheap until our place sells here. It’s just hubby and me and our 2 dogs. Hubby doesn’t like big cities but I want to be by daughter. We are (surprise!) conservative Christians. Apartments to rent under $1200 for our taste you think we would like in or near Austin?

If your reason to relocate is to be by Family you’ll be happy. There are pockets of “your kind” (I kid). Someone will chime in on areas to look. You’ll be able to find a nice one bedroom in that range. Will you two be working? Where does your daughter live in Austin? fWIW, I’ve found several apartments in south Austin with small yards st about $1200 more ir less a month.

Average rent in Austin (within 10 miles) for a one-bedroom apartment is $1243.

I would recommend an apartment locator, free to you and a great help in finding an apartment especially with dogs, hopefully they are on the small side. There are some complexes without breed or size restrictions, this is where a locator can be a big help.

good luck!

I saw several apartments in your price range last week while shopping with my cousin who is moving here. She was looking west and south and found some in both areas. Depends on where you'd like to live, but you can find something.

The Austin area is pretty spread out similar to So Cal. What part of Austin does your daughter live in? We could recommend an area of Georgetown for example, but if your daughter lives in South Austin then that wouldn't make sense.

You're going to be limited by lease terms in order to fit your budget though depending on the size of apartment that you want and the area of town. There are a lot of apartments out there that will be within your price range, but most of them will want you to sign a one year lease. If you're looking for something short term and will want to get out when your house sells, you might have to pay hundreds more per month for a month-to-month or a lease term less than 6 months. We were a bit surprised by this when we rented an apartment while in-between selling and buying another home. A couple complexes that we looked at wouldn't rent any of their units at all for anything less than a one year lease.

Some good questions above.

A) Will one or both of you be working at an office location that you will commute to on a regular basis?

B) Where general area of town does your daughter live?

C) Do you want to be 5 minutes away, or is 1/2 hour, 45 minutes, hour, etc. acceptable?

You can avoid the city proper if your daughter doesn't live right downtown and you want to live next door. As others have mentioned, an apartment finder service is great, especially for people that are not living locally while searching.

Good questions, I'd also be very upfront with the apartment locator on the lease term length that you want along with the weight and breeds of your two dogs. I've had friends get their hearts set on the "perfect" apartment only to find out that they wouldn't accept their dogs after they filled out the non-refundable application fee (only ~$50, but can add up).

Check out the Cedar Park, Twin Creeks, Lakeline area near far northwest Austin. Probably the most conservative area of the city.

You can live almost anywhere around Austin, it just depends on close to your daughter during this transition time. As with California we have alot of traffic, and it can take quite a bit of time to get from one area to another. If you can comeback and post where she lives we could give you a better idea.
