I am a retired LEO, fairly new here. Has their been an uptick in crime lately? I have heard the Police have been defunded, not really sure but it has been brought to my attention that they are extremely short staffed. A friend of mine who is still on the job back home sent me this -

APD has been short well over 100 officers for years, and last year the City Council canceled two cadet classes, exacerbating the problem. Yes, the CC has defunded the PD budget to the tune of millions, with some functions being moved to other agencies.
The crime increases are a direct result of some of those council actions, along with rapid growth and the two year old homeless camping fiasco generated by the council allowing them to camp almost anywhere.

Austin is not a cop friendly city currently, IMO, and is run by a bunch of incompetents & corrupt politicians.
Of course there are no shortage of hardcore council supporters who deny it all.

My understanding is there is a gap in the replacement of retiring LEO as the next new cadet isn't due till June.

Thank you both for the information. Cedar Park/RR area seems to be very Police friendly. Most people I have spoke to actually are pro-law enforcement. I rarely see Austin PD when I venture into North/South Austin, I see mostly DPS and Travis County Sheriff and some Constables once in a while.

Funds were reallocated. The police were not “defunded.”

Once in awhile I will see APD fairly regularly but there does seem to be less of them than there used to be. They're never patrolling 183 in N.W. Austin like they used to. There was almost always a guaranteed speed trap just south of the interchange of 183 and 45 in either direction but I haven't seen that in ages now.

Yes they have been.
Here are some numbers...

I will say that moving the Forensics lab from APD control was needed since former Chief Art Acevedo let it deteriorate for years culminating In the rape kit scandal. He skipped out to Houston where he horribly mishandled the corrupt vice squad shooting fiasco... and then bounced over to Miami.

Hopefully they are doing some much needed retraining, but neglecting cadet classes is not the smartest move.

You do sure love that website. You cite that "news" outlet a lot.

If we put the news source info aside, can the information within it be proven inaccurate or partially factual with raw data (non-news article based given that is the most concrete and non-biased information from either party - supporters or opposers... ...I’m asking honestly here, not weighing an opinion).

From my understanding APD’s operating budget was indeed decreased as funds were reallocated.

My main reason for asking this isn’t necessarily to support or defend anyone’s opinion but something I’ve noticed a lot in America especially as of late is that we see a news source and label it as liberal or conservative and immediately dismiss it when there may be valuable content (this goes for both parties) .. I personally try to take what is valid out of it and compare to what can be proven rather than immediately shutting it down so to speak. I personally feel that makes the debate more fair as it excludes all and any biases (and both parties have them).
