My fave is Home Slice b/c I like NY style.

My hubby's fave is Salvation (he's from CT) - we always order asparagus. YUM! We've gotten to know the owners and they fly something in from CT...yeast? Not sure, but apparently it's something that they can't get here from food distributors.

Austin's Pizza used to be better than it is now (we had a friend in the local pizza biz who said that as they grew, to save money, they cut back on the quality of their ingredients - particularly the cheese - big NO NO in my book), so we haven't had it in years.

Saccone's is pretty good NY/Jersey pie.

We hated the place on South Congress - the "Pittsburgh" style place - is that Southside Flying? Was sort of like a big doughy ball with junk on it. If you like doughy crust, then you'd like that. If you like thin crust, it's awful.

Haven't made it over to Eastside Pies yet!

I just tried my first pie from Home Slice. It was good. Not great, but good. I'd rate it about the same as Aljon's (on East Oltorf), but still a fair bit below Brick Oven, in my book.

I'm still looking forward to trying Eastside Pies.

To those who like Frank & Angie's...what is it you like about those pies?

We went there, it was our first local-to-Austin-good-pizza-joint quest, and it was not at all what we expected from fresh-made pizza.

We went to Saccones, up in RR, but the inside of the place had to be 90F, this was back in the spring, so we passed. It was good-looking, however...the pies I mean.

We need to try Brick Oven one of these days....

We tried East Side Pies yesterday.
Very good crust and cheese, a little light on the sauce. I like light sauce but it was even too light for me. That said, I would rather have light sauce and good crust than sweet red sauce.
But I would rate it a 7 1/2 out of 10.
Southside was too doughy for my taste.

Did you get the full size 18" or the smaller pizzas? For some reason the crust is completely different on the smaller ones and is mediocre.

We did the 18" one, but it was still mediocre.

The crust stood out as being so-so, but it was other things compounding it which made us thing, "so, this is good Austin pizza, eh?"

It didn't help the pizza we'd had last, which was memorable, was in Chicago at the Taste Of Chicago.

NY native here. My favorite pizza places are, in no particular order:

Slices and Ices (reminds me of Long Island pizza that I grew up on).

Reale's, love the roasted pie, probably my favorite in town.

There's a Yahgi's by my house so I go there frequently. Not my favorite, but good.

I tried Rounders recently and enjoyed it (the crust and meatballs, specifically).

I've been known to enjoy a pie from Brick Oven (on 35th) as well.

This is a thread, I figured, that is best answered around lunchtime

Reales: One of my favorites -- to me, this feels like an east-coast family style Italian restaurant, including the pizza. Not like the huge NY-style pizza parlor slices, but similar in taste and very good. Seems to be a consensus for this place.

For Chicago style deep-dish, I like Conan's Pizza (local chain). Plus, they have a specialty pizza (The Savage) that has anchovies, which is always a plus in my eyes. Sure, most places have them as an option, but not as part of one of their regular pizzas.

Unfortunately, I've got to mention a national chain here, because I've found their deep dish to be suprisingly good. BJ's Brewhouse. There is one in South Austin on Brodie.

Homeslice on South Congress has, to me, is the closest to NYC pizza parlour style -- big & foldable, with a sweet thin layer of tomato sauce and crust that is almost raw at the very top under the sauce. Something about the oven, maybe.

Craig O's (local chain) is the favorite of my wife. I like it too, but haven't really found something there that knocks my socks off.

Haven't tried East Side Pies yet. Has anyone tried Hoboken Pie in downtown? I've heard they have 20" pizza that is very authentic NY style.

Nobody has mentioned "The Parlor" yet, but I plan on trying it this weekend for the first time. I've only seen good reviews for its thick crust pizza. And they have free live Rock music at night.

The best pizza that I've had so far in Austin is definitely Conan's in my opinion, but I'm not a thin slice NY style fan.
