The reason is that they kill cattle, and possibly also household pets if they get close enough.
I've heard the wild dogs at night...it's a really eerie, chilling sound. Mind you, an unidentified shuffling noise around your tent in the middle of a pitch black night has its own chill factor.
Campfire ghost stories anyone???
Wicked!

On a different note, how/when did Australia acquire the nickname Land of Oz?

I think that came about for two reasons. Obvious reason is that we call ourselves Aussies which when we say it sounds like Ozzies, that got shortened...because you know Australians can never make a word short enough. Of course with the shortening comes the obvious connection to the Wizard of Oz and I think the media grabbed hold of that and used it to make Australia seem the place you want to make the journey to. Also, I think that we like the idea of living in the "merry old land of Oz" it suits us perfectly.

There was a young mozzie from ozzie
Whose legs looked great in a cozzie
When asked how he swam
He said "I eat spam!"
And kicked up his heels in a pozzie.

Translation: There was a young mosquito from Australia
Whose legs looked superb in a swimming costume
When asked how he swam
He said "I eat a can of preserved ham!"
And kicked up his heels in a pose (or position).

Eh.
