Any truth to their allegations, or just sour grapes?

Have to admit, I have an ignorant, Hollywood constructed concept of what Australia is.

I'm not enitrely sure what they're refering too? The only thing I can think of, Is the extensive Trade unionism in Australia? Maybe they felt that labourers were too well protected, or that their ability to obtian Welfare was too easy?

Yes, I'd say we're a nanny state - they nanny us where it's not needed, where common-sense should prevail, but let cretins have a free-for-all.

But then we've entered the litigious era, so city councils and other levels of govt have to disallow a lot of previously allowed activities and amenities in case some twit sues. They showed something on tv the other week where the city council was cutting down tree swings in people's front yards because of the risk - the swings were on or just over the property line. It wasn't a busy street, looked like an outer, outer suburb, I doubt they'd have much foot traffic, but just in case ...

And then you only have to take one look at the boring children's playgrounds in many parks these days. Where are the monkey bars? The slides? There are other examples, just can't remember them - too many.

Is Kevvie still going ahead with his Internet Filter? If so, there's a good example of nannying, and socialism. Maybe more along the lines of fascism. And stupidity.

There is socialism in a strict sense & in a broader sense...

The broader definition of socialism,in economic terms,
is the size of the government sector & the size of total taxation,as % of GNP.

So,socialism = public sector ,as% of GNP X taxes,as % of GNP.

Communism is 100% of the economy belonging to government.

Capitalism,as an ideal, is 0% gov sector,0% taxation...

Socially, socialism euro style is defined by 2 symbols,

the prohibition of guns & of the death penalty.

Therefore,all Europe & Australia,unfortunately are socialist countries.

Even USA moves to socialism,as government control increases & taxation goes up...

Something about "you can't even work in your own house", etc.

Anyone know what these guys were talking about? Have to admit, I didn't get along too well with either of them for a number of reasons.
They were probably talking about the regulations here that say it is illegal for DIY'ers to do their own plumbing and electrical. You're supposed to call a "pro" for everything, wait forever, and pay through the nose. And you don't necessarily get professional work, service or attitude. They say it's for public safety, but I'd say it's more for protecting the industry. There are perfectly capable DIY types with the interest and common-sense to do it properly (better than some of the licensed cowboys here). My husband's very capable that way. In Canada, they publish the electrical code in an easy to follow book. You do it yourself, get it inspected and everyone's happy. Far more intelligent. People will do it themselves, that's just reality. Better to have them educated and checked than have them do it on the sly, incorrectly.

based on your definition, which i am not sure if it is correct, there are NO capitalist countries.. since there is NO country with 0% govvernment sector! So every country is socialist to varying degrees. not sure if it is defined by the symbols of gun or death penalty.. i went to a socialist web site and they did not state that that was how they were defined. actually no government sector would be anarchy so perhaps the closest capitalist model is.. somalia

Malcolm Turnbull = A nobody, a vacuum, temporarily...leading? a vacuous opposition, a small fish in a big pond, a wanna be but never will be.

Well, it IS more fascist than socialist. Just 7 weeks in office, and the dolt has created a chaos that will take at least 12 years to repair.

Badge, I couldn't decide whether you were serious with your post, or if you were merely a delusional joker. If you are serious, I'm afraid that you represent why this country will soon become a third-world nation.
