Nissan has a 480V 'quick charge' that can charge the battery from empty to 80% in 30min, but reduces battery life. Not bad, but not nearly good enough.

And you can expect about 75 miles of range driving in TX.

If they made an electric car with a 200 mile range that could charge in under 10 minutes, I would buy it.
Not if it cost $300,000.

75mi on a warm day.

I wonder how far it goes in -30*f as the heater will be on and the cold reduces the batteries capabilities even further.

humm, no flying pigs yet.

good post, its about money. americans are not out of money yet, when they are--- bicycles, scooters and electric golf carts/cars will all look good, just like in japan, where only the rich have cars.
until then, we are all "middle class" and hope to become president next year.

I don't even feel comfortable driving a gas car from Sault Ste. Marie to Timmins (275 miles) overnight. Last time I did that, there was no overnight station in Chapleau.

If I have only one car, I want it to be one I can drive to Alaska in (or Timmins) if I want to. Or from Grand Junction to Green River. Or Presidio to Camargo, which I do often. By the way, how do I drive my electric car through Mexico at all?

If I drive cross country, driving 700-800 miles a day, how many times do I charge my electric car, and how long does each charge take? Last time I drove across with somewhere to go, it was from Cincinnati to Oakland, and I did it in about 60 hours. Can you do that in an electric?

Yes, we are improving the grid all the time. Southern California Edison figures even right now, they could effectively replace half the Southern California cars with EVs and, using smart charging, not impact even the CURRENT grid.

But again, you think that once EVs start getting sold in normal prodution car numbers that the 20+ years it'll take to replace half the cars in the country will be enough time to upgrade the grid?

Worrying about the grid as though it'll be overwhelmed overnight is silly and pointless. Seriously.

BTW, over 60% of housholds in the US have 2 or more cars already. EVs work just fine as primary cars with a gas car as a backup (and cars like the Volt work fine as single cars, as they CAN be used on the occasional long trip using gasoline instead of the EV only commuter mode) or vice versa.

A lot more people than you think. I have made the drive twice. I know people that do it a few times a year as well.
