I live on the way up to a ski area. I see stuff like this all the time. 4WD/AWD doesn't make you invincible in the snow. Snow tires and common sense will keep you stuck free! He parked on a hill and over unplowed snow that had him more or less high centered. His lack of rythym and common sense kept him there.
Too many people get AWD vehicles as a crutch for poor winter driving skills. The wider all season tires they put on those cars are for mileage, not traction. When they get stuck, it's the cars fault. Never mind that the old guy in a Honda Accord just did the same route with no problem.
I think he could have just backed up a car length to where the pavement was showing and probably have gotten out. Or just backed into the roadway since he was facing uphill.
How many drivers are so foolish to gun the engine to try to get out? It just polishes the ice!!
Slow, and back/forth will rock you out.
Beside, if you gun the engine ... and for some reason you suddenly get traction, won't you blast out of your space going much to fast to then stop from hitting something else???
He really needs to have a shovel and some calcium chloride in his vehicle during the winter. Another thing would be to keep the front wheels straight until he gets moving and not to spin the tires. It's amazing how many SUVs go off the road and get stuck in the snow, false sense of security and bad risks I guess.

And some kitty litter.
